The Medical Assistant Lead works directly with Southwest Center providers to serve our patients with integrity and through a person-centered approach. Our Medical Assistants are highly organized self-starters who have strong interpersonal skills and are excellent problem solvers providing non-judgmental care to our community members. As a Lead you will support the MA team as a subject matter expert and will train new and established staff.

In this role, you will contribute to the Southwest Center mission of providing affirming and inclusive services to promote well-being and advance health equity for diverse communities and all those seeking compassionate care - especially people of color, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, and those affected by HIV.

What your day will look like at Southwest Center:

  • Prepare for patient appointments by reviewing and updating patient records prior to patient arrival.
  • Assess challenges, situations or issues presented and appropriately prioritize while assisting with resolution using strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Participate in orientation, mentoring and training of new and established staff.
  • Work with various healthcare and support staff to assure smooth and efficient patient flow and clinical operations including patient scheduling, inventory maintenance, prescription and lab processing, lab draws, assisting with procedures, and preparing/administering medications and injections via multiple routes for various treatment purposes.
  • Foster client focused care such as obtaining, communicating, and recording patient related information including vital signs, drug allergies, medications, medical histories, and reason for visit in Electronic Health Records (EHR, EClinicalWorks) in a timely manner.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures and manage specimens including labeling, requisition completion, transport to laboratories, and log maintenance.
  • Provide HIV and STI education services to individuals at high-risk for HIV infection. Facilitate and process blood (finger stick and venipuncture) specimens and prepare specimens for laboratory processing. Provide HIV test results to clients.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned including, but not limited to, processing referrals, medical records reconciliation, completing prior authorizations, triaging phone calls, and scanning/uploading documents into patient charts.
  • Cross-train in front office duties to ensure coverage in the event operations requires them to float to assist with coverage.
  • Document and monitor the temperatures of the phlebotomy lab, patient rooms, and all medication and supply storage rooms and refrigerators.
  • Conduct routine inventory of all health clinic supplies and medications and place the appropriate orders to maintain a sufficient number of supplies stocked in office.
  • Manage incoming orders by reconciling with invoice and ensuring items are stored appropriately.
  • Meet regularly with Clinic Operations Manager to advise on process improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct ongoing training with Medical Assistant staff to ensure compliance with established workflows and operational processes.
  • Conduct and track all quality controls (i.e. strep tests, urine dips, pregnancy tests).
  • Maintain daily log of all clinic room and refrigerator temperatures as required by CDC.
  • Initiate request for maintenance of equipment and facilities as needed.
  • Participate in regulatory reviews, audits and process improvement projects.
  • Serves as subject matter expert for Medical Assistant team.

Who we're looking for:

  • You've earned a High School diploma.
  • You've graduated with a certificate of completion or diploma from an approved and accredited (CAAHEP or ABHES) medical assisting training program.
  • You have 3+ years of Medical Assistant experience.
  • You have demonstrated cultural competency to professionally and respectfully serve the LGBTQIAS+ communities.
  • You're a professional, flexible, caring, and compassionate person who exhibits a congenial and sensitive attitude toward patients.
  • You have excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) and EHR software.
  • You're a highly organized, detail-oriented self-started with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • You have an ability to assess organizational needs to establish priorities and multi-task effectively while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • You have strong interpersonal skills in dealing with a variety of people and proven ability to work independently and collaborate with others.

Environmental Factors, Physical Requirements, and Compliance

  • Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
  • Must be able to work at least two evenings per week.
  • Office environment, exposure to computer screens for lengthy periods of time.
  • Travel outside of the Phoenix region approximately 10% of the time.
  • Currently have, or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment, a valid Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Currently have, or are able to obtain within 7 days of employment, a clear TB test.
  • Currently have, or are able to obtain within 7 days of employment, a current flu vaccination.
  • Currently have, or are able to initiate within 7 days of employment, a Hepatitis-B primary vaccination series.
  • Currently have, or are able to obtain within 14 days of employment, a CPR certification.
