POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Merchant plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of their designated business category. Collaborating closely with the merchant team and assistants, they craft customer-centric assortment plans tailored to meet the needs of our target customers. This role entails close collaboration with the VP of Merchandising and Planning Manager to drive sales, enhance gross margins, and achieve key performance indicators (KPIs). The ideal candidate demonstrates a profound understanding of the interplay between financial strategies and merchandise objectives.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify and articulate market trends and competitive products through directed research and firsthand analysis. Critique merchandise or new product categories to determine market value and demand opportunity.
  • Understand Levenger product assortment and tools for readers and writers.
  • Assurance all products meet or exceed Levenger standards.
  • Negotiate prices, discount terms and transportation arrangements for merchandise.
  • Develop and source products according to annual and seasonal objectives for each business.
  • Measure progress and course correct as needed to meet financial metrics.
  • Understand competitive environment.
  • Examine, select, order, and purchase at the most favorable price merchandise consistent with quality, quantity, specification requirements and other factors.
  • Analyze and monitor sales records, trends, and economic conditions to anticipate consumer buying patterns and determine what the company will sell and how much inventory is needed.
  • Act as a go-to contact for a group of products, understanding the purpose, functionality, and reasoning behind their existence, and communicate these attributes in a comprehensive manner. Communicate daily with overseas vendors to resolve questions about products in development, production or in transit. Request and coordinate samples.
  • Establish, maintain, and communicate products’ positioning, features, and benefits through the development/update of creative direction sheets.
  • Have a working knowledge of raw materials, construction techniques and new material developments.
  • Have a strong understanding of mail order, online and retail businesses.
  • Use software to organize and locate inventory, operate spreadsheet, and word processing software and to research markets and competitors via the internet.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in writing and in person. Experienced with assembling and giving presentations.
  • Other duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements:
  • 3 to 5 years of related retail, merchandising or marketing experience preferred.
  • Merchandise planning.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Skills, Excel, and Power Point. VLOOKUP a plus.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in writing and in person.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent presentation and business communication skills to work with associates at all levels.
