Job Summary:

Compass Systems Inc. is seeking a well experienced Drafter to provide design and documentation support on a variety of aircraft modification and integration efforts within the Aircraft Prototype Systems Division (APSD), Naval Air Warfare Division Aircraft Division. The Drafter will create mechanical and electrical models and drawings in accordance with ASME's and military standards. Models and drawings shall include, mechanical components and complex assemblies, electrical panels, wiring diagrams, circuit board assembly diagrams, schematics, and layout drawings used for manufacture, installation, and repair of electronic equipment.

Essential Job Functions:

The drafter should be capable of performing the following:

  • Drafts detail and assembly drawings and designs of electromechanical equipment, aircraft componentry, and related systems.
  • Creates detailed mechanical drawings in accordance with ASME 14.100M and MIL-STD-100.
  • Modifies existing 3D models and drawings.
  • Creates master layout of design components and circuitry and printed circuit boards, according to specifications, and utilizing computer-assisted equipment.
  • Plots electrical test points on layout sheet, using pencil, and draws schematics to wire test fixture heads to frame.
  • Consults with engineers to discuss and interpret design concepts and determine requirements of detailed working drawings.
  • Examines electronic schematics and analyzes logic diagrams and design documents to plan layout of printed circuit board components and circuitry.
  • Compares logic element configuration on display screen with engineering schematics and calculates figures to convert, redesign, and modify element.
  • Reviews blueprints to determine customer requirements and consults with assembler regarding schematics, wiring procedures, and conductor paths.
  • Copies drawings of printed circuit board fabrication, using print machine or blueprinting procedure.

Other Job Functions:

  • Selects drill size to drill test head, according to test design and specifications, and submits guide layout to designated department.
  • Generates computer tapes of final layout design to produce layered photo masks and photo-plots design onto film.
  • Compiles data, computes quantities, and prepares cost estimates to determine equipment needs, and requisitions materials as required.
  • Examines and verifies master layout for electrical and mechanical accuracy.
  • Keys and programs specified commands and engineering specifications into computer system to change functions and test final layout.
  • Reviews work orders and procedural manuals and confers with vendors and design staff to resolve problems and modify design.
  • Locates files relating to specified design projection data base library, loads program into computer, and records completed job data.


Associate degree or higher in engineering graphic or equivalent or HS Diploma and five+ years of mechanical and electrical; design, drafting, and documentation.

Knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools and instruments involved in the use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

Functional ability using CAD software and associated PLM (Product Lifecycle Management Suite) – (Preferably PTC CREO/WindChill).

Knowledge of electric circuit boards, processors, chips, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee routinely is required to sit, stand, walk, see, hear, and feel. Occasionally will need to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Must be able to interpret data, information, and documents. Can learn and apply new information and/or skills. Possible 10% travel may be required.
