With the holidays coming up, you might be wondering what sort of gift to get that college student in your life. Let me tell you that college really changes our wants and desires, and makes us pretty easy in the gift giving realm.
Here are the five most necessary holiday gifts for today's college students.
Especially if the college student that you are shopping for currently resides in the dorms, they will be head over heels in love with your food gift. You can make them a cute treat basket with some of their favorite goodies, get them new coffee capsules, or even just give them grocery money. We college students do a lot of scavenging to save money and to avoid the dorm food (or what they call "food") so any item that resembles real food is gladly appreciated.
This can also come in the form of a gift card to a fun restaurant so your college student can treat themselves and a friend or special someone to a nice night out.
My mom gave me a Starbucks gift card in my stocking last year and it was one of my favorite gifts since I'm addicted to coffee.
If you know that special food item that your college student loves to splurge on, then a food gift card will be the perfect addition to their holiday.
Remember when you'd give your kid a pair of socks or underwear as a gift and they'd cry? Well, college students are down for any type of clothing, especially the essentials. More underwear means having to do laundry less often, so if you give some to us as a gift, we'll be set.
If you know your college student's style, you could also surprise them with a new outfit or two to spruce up their wardrobe. Do they go to school where it rains a lot? Maybe you can get them a pair of rain boots or a nifty new rain jacket!
If you have no idea what type of clothing to get a college student, don't shy away from gifts cards. A lot of people don't go for gift cards because they say that they are impersonal, but college students definitely don't see it that way. Most of us love going shopping and expressing ourselves through our clothing, and a gift card is a super fun way to splurge and get exactly what we have been wanting.
If you aren't sure what clothing stores your college student would like, Forever 21 is always a good bet. They have cheap clothing with styles that range all over the spectrum so your college student is bound to find something there.
You can also opt for a Visa gift card so they can use it anywhere and you don't have to worry about them not liking the store that you pick.
3) An adventure
For a gift, why not take your college student somewhere fun? Maybe you can take a road trip or go camping or go wine tasting or snowboarding! College students love adventure, and no matter how big or small it is, they will be grateful for the escape from reality after surviving their finals. Or, consider funding their study abroad trip for spring semester.
If you want to take them somewhere where you will need to fly, be on the lookout for airline deals. If you monitor the airfare every other day or so, you might be able to score a pretty good deal and give your college student the surprise of their life.
4) Room decor
College students are always looking for new ways to personalize their off-campus apartments, so why not opt for getting them some decor for their rooms? This could come in the form of festive candles, picture frames, wall art, a tapestry, a fuzzy rug to nap on, a picture mobile, tea lights for the wall, and so on.
Maybe there is an item or two that they have been wanting, like a sun shaped mirror or a giant puffy ceiling ball, that they just haven't had the chance to save up for yet, so this would be a fun surprise!
If you aren't sure what to get them, why not take a trip to Target or World Market and let them pick out a thing or two? Now that they are older, presents don't have to be as much of a surprise as when they were little, so you can take them shopping to make sure they get the right decor for their place.
5) Gadget accessories
College students are constantly using their headphones and computer chargers to the point where the cables can get pretty bent out of shape, so gadget accessories are always a good bet when thinking of a gift.
You could get them a pair of spare headphones, a new computer charger, a durable phone case so they won't damage their phone, a computer decal, or anything else to spruce up their electronics that they hold near and dear to them. These are things that they always need but hate spending money on, making them the perfect things to receive as gifts.
These are five gift ideas that are sure to make your college student happy this holiday season.
