Allison asked on our blog:
“I was wondering if I should continue to look for and apply to jobs while I'm still pregnant? It seems they take one look and dismiss me.”
Great question, Allison!
The Pregnancy Discrimination Act states that with companies who employ 15 or more people, “…women affected by pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions shall be treated the same for all employment-related purposes…”
It is illegal for these employer to treat you differently than any other applicant, but I cannot say that this always happens. Based on the wording of your question, I am guessing you are already showing. But, you are under no obligation to inform the interviewer that you are pregnant. You should steer clear of any jobs that being pregnant would hinder your performance (anything involving flying, bike messenger, construction, etc..).
If you want to inform the interviewer that you are, in fact, pregnant, use your best discretion as to when to make the announcement. It may be best to wait until the final interview or hiring stage. As always, be completely sure that your resume and application have absolutely no spelling or grammar mistakes. It may be difficult but, I say, apply away!
