Now that your summer job search has started, it’s time to start thinking about how you want to present yourself to your future employer! We recently conducted a survey of companies that are hiring summer help and asked them to rank what what they are looking for in that perfect summer hire….drum roll please….
#1 – A positive attitude and friendly personality
70 percent of employers list this this as the most important trait they are searching for. When you are getting ready for your interview, be sure to look awake and come across as genuinely enthusiastic about the opportunity. If you feel you are lacking in experience, make up for it with the lively attitude you will bring to the position. Quick tip: sitting up straight and smiling will make you look alert.
# 2 – Job availability
Summer may be a time you want to spend your nights and weekends with friends. But, having an open, flexible schedule is necessary when looking for your summer job. Let your employer know that you can be ready when they need you. By giving them restrictions, they may look to a candidate who is willing to make the time for the company. Make them see that you are the reliable candidate they need in their summer work force.
# 3 – Relevant experience
If you feel that you don’t have the exact experience they are looking for, be sure to give the interviewer examples of how you can use your strengths to develop the qualities they need. Volunteering is a great way to get the experience, gain references and help out your community! If you do have the experience, play it up in your interview. Use your contacts to your advantage and come with examples of how you excelled in your previous position.
# 4 – Interview performance
If you follow the tips above and search through all our interview advice you will bring your A game to the interview. The smallest detail, like arriving early, could make the biggest difference. Give yourself as many advantages as possible and don’t forget to follow up!
