Now your parents didn't lie to you when they told you it is what's on the inside that counts. But, in a job interview a first impression is crucial, so as much as we hate to say it your appearance does matter. Besides having proper interview attire, your day to day style might have to undergo a few tweaks to be interview ready.
Piercings can distract the interviewer and violate company policy before you're even hired. So, if you have a tongue or facial piercing it's best to take it out before the interview. Earrings are safe, but make sure they are a reasonable size and limit them to one per ear.
Cover your tattoos as much as possible. Wear clothing that will hide them or even use tattoo cover up so they won't be visible. Similar to piercings, tattoos can be distracting or may even break policy. You want the interviewer to be focused on you and your qualifications, not your ink.
Try to shy away from unnatural hair colors like pink, green, purple, etc. Keep your hair in a neat, clean style. You don't want to look like there is a bird’s nest on your head. The goal is to appear as polished as possible. This is extremely important for food service positions, but still good to keep in mind for any type of job interview.
Don't get us wrong, self-expression is awesome and we're all about it. But until you get that job offer you want your resume and application to stand out during your job search, not your personal style. When trying to land a job, you can never be too careful and you don't want anything standing in your way. Happy job hunting!
