The work requires physical strength, stamina, and good organizational skills. Hours tend to be long and irregular, and the job may involve a great deal of driving. Moving is normally a seasonal trade-the busiest months are generally June - September. However, we've been seeing a very busy off-season this year.
Household goods truck operators load household goods or office equipment onto trucks, transport it to a new location, and then unload it. They may move as few as one or two items or the contents of an entire house or office.
A mover's main objective is to load and transport items without damage. They need to know the best way to pack delicate items such as china, glassware, and mirrors. They may disassemble furniture, such as beds, so it fits through doorways or into elevators. They may place furniture in special containers designed to protect it for irregularly shaped items. Drivers must also maintain inventories of the items they transport.
Truck operators are expected to exhibit supervisory skills in managing crews that load and unload shipments.
All movers are expected to practice proper customer service skills and to work with shippers (customers) to resolve any problems that may arise.
Truck operators are also expected to manage their time accordingly, so that pickups and deliveries are made in a timely manner.
