NRTC is Member Driven and Technology Focused – providing solutions that help our 1,500 electric and telephone members bring all the advantages of today’s evolving technology to rural America. NRTC’s solutions are developed specifically to meet the needs of rural utilities and their customers, and include integrated smart grid solutions, metering networks, next-generation energy, demand management, broadband, managed services, mobile and video. We are a dynamic, growing cooperative with more than 750 employees operating out of six office locations. We are looking to add experienced staff to our Smart Grid team to help our utility cooperative members develop their smart grid technology roadmap through a consultative process.



As the Sr. Engineer, Smart Grid Technology, you will be a key member of the forming and growing smart grid advisory services team. You will work across smart grid disciplines to execute projects to develop smart grid technology roadmaps for our member electric co-ops. You will continually learn as you bridge the gap between NRTC subject matter experts and co-op members to develop technology roadmaps that help our members answer the what, why, when, how, and how much about smart grid initiatives you recommend they implement.

You are bringing a general understanding of electric distribution utility operations as well as a keen ability to develop frameworks to answer complex questions. You will also bring a general understanding of the smart grid functions including but not limited to, long range plans, construction work plans, distributed energy resource system impact studies, protection/sectionalizing, arc flash, power factor correction, and system reliability.   

You will be able to demonstrate proven ability to successfully work across organizational boundaries to lead project execution.



  • Assist the VP of Smart Grid Advisory and Networks in management and delivery of smart grid technology roadmap projects by interviewing and procuring data from member co-ops, organizing and facilitating workshops on smart grid topics, development of business cases and preparation of presentation materials.
  • Provide proactive contributions to Regional Business Managers who are responsible for business development.
  • Create and/or modify business plans and financial models.
  • Create and present compelling stories that demonstrate insight in presentation format.
  • Stay current on smart grid technologies and roadmaps and to provide thoughtful insights based on member challenges and capabilities.
  • Life of project responsibility for smart grid technology roadmap development.
  • Establish thought leadership and content around smart grid technology planning and grow into a recognized leader in the cooperative utility space.
  • Assist team members in the prospecting and deployment of Smart Grid solutions for AMI, resiliency, demand management and strategic road mapping.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent experience working with electric cooperatives. Master’s degree a plus.
  • 2-5 years of experience / research in smart grid technology and/or consulting.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, work ethic, and professionalism.
  • Ability to create electric utility financial models designed to represent the performance of a financial asset, project, or other investment.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and maintain positive relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Candidates should be self-driven, able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, and comfortable interfacing with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong written, analytical, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working on teams in electric utilities working with areas such as reliability and outage management, load management, power quality, and/or solar/storage a plus.
  • Electric utility experience desired, cooperative experience a plus.


  • Effective project management, relationship-building, and negotiation skill. Excellent written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and maintain positive relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Proficiency in Excel and Power Point
  • Ability to travel 30-50%
