Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is currently seeking a Sonar System Engineer/Analyst (Level 4) for its Autonomous Systems Maritime Undersea business unit for sonar system analysis, modeling and simulation, algorithm development, and "at sea" test bed design. Candidate will also define sonar system architectures and system CONOPS, and conduct requirements allocation, development, analyses, decomposition, and verification & validation. The candidate will conduct relevant Engineering and program analyses including Risk Management, Mission Assurance, System Safety, Qualification and Integration & Test, and Technology Readiness Reviews. This position is located in Herndon, VA on 1st shift.
Position Responsibilities:
Sonar system specification and selection for Boeing's family of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and related payloads
Analyze the performance of existing sonar systems for a given application using simulation tools such as PC SWAT, PC IMAT and CASS/GRAB
Select the appropriate sonar system for a given system application
Support Boeing's technical interface with sonar suppliers and Boeing customers
Sonar algorithm development
Assess the performance of underwater acoustic signal sonar processing algorithms to a given set of system requirements
Model, develop, and improve the algorithms in a simulation environment (such as Matlab®)
Provide a technical definition and flow-down of these algorithms to the systems and software engineering teams to support implementation and integration onto platforms
Maintain a technical liaison role through the process of software and system verification and validation
At-sea testing
Design at-sea tests to verify that the required sonar capability has be achieved
Provide on-site test support
Evaluate recorded acoustic data from the fleet/field for performance and enhancements
Analyze the data collected during the tests and prepare test reports
Presentations
Develop presentation materials
Prepare and present briefings internally and to customer organizations including industry forums/associations.
Mentoring
Provide informal mentoring to junior engineers
Provide formal mentoring to junior software & systems engineers on sonar algorithms and testing techniques.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Qualifications):
This position requires the ability to obtain a Top Secret U.S. Security Clearance using a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI). A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.
Experience with active sonar (such as active sonobuoys, forward looking sonar, side looking sonar and synthetic aperture sonar) and passive sonar (such as passive sonobuoys and towed hydrophone arrays)
Experience with underwater acoustic signal processing, sonar performance prediction and sonar algorithm development, modeling and integration
Experience with algorithm design for real time signal and data processing (such as FFTs, time and frequency domain filtering, resampling, beamforming, correlation and tracking)
Experience with basic detection theory and estimation theory
Demonstrated sonar domain knowledge
- Properties of acoustic transducers
- Acoustic propagation and noise in the ocean
- Acoustic target strengths of underwater objects
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Current Top Secret preferred
Sonar-related publications in refereed journals
Sonar-related technical talks/presentations at conferences
Sonar-related patents
Experience with the application of AI / ML approaches to SONAR-related areas
Typical Education/Experience:
Earned BA or BS (MS or PhD desired) in acoustics, electrical engineering, physics or an appropriate related field
