Job Description

Title: Software Engineer Location: Ashburn or Tyson, VA Are you interested in enabling end-users and data scientists to access the data they need when they need it? We're hiring engineers to morph an existing system built on top of ElasticSearch into a Data Hub. This system currently ingests data from multiple sources, normalizes that data into a common data model, provides full-text search across the entire collection, and allows access for downstream dissemination services. Through this re-architecture, we will expand the capabilities to provide a secure, highly available, and scalable environment for both humans and machines to derive the insights and analytics required to make mission-critical decisions. With your help, we will enrich the data with external AI/ML tools via event based processing, provide additional analytics and change detection services, and provide data scientists access to the data holdings to enhance our existing processes and tools. We're looking for Software Engineers with knowledge of various data access patterns and underlying technology implementations. You should be knowledgeable on how to properly secure the data from unauthorized access at multiple data access points (e.g. search discovery rules, repository read rules, S3 bucket policies, etc). You should also know how to keep distributed data stores in-sync and how to detect state drift. Finally, you should have excellent knowledge of the AWS ecosystem to support both the existing infrastructure (built on EC2 with CloudFormation) and to help us build the next-generation data hub[1][2][3]. Interested in learning more? Please apply today! Required Skills/Experience:
? U.S. Citizenship
? Security Clearance: Secret preferred, willing to upgrade clearance
? Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field
? Experience with Lucene based search engines (e.g. Elasticsearch or Solr)
? Experience with Java or Kotlin
? Experience with Spring Boot (Spring Framework)
? Experience with testing frameworks and tools (e.g. JUnit, AssertJ, Mockito, Spring Runner)
? Experience with scripting languages (e.g. Python, Bash)
? Experience with object-oriented software development
? Experience working within a Linux environment
? Experience working with a message-driven architecture (e.g. JMS, Kafka, Kinesis, SNS/SQS, etc.)
? Experience with Git for source control
? Ability to determine the right tool or technology for the task at hand
? Works well in a team environment
? Strong communication skills Desired Skills:
? Experience operating Data Lakes or Data Hubs with knowledge on how to optimize storage technology for client access patterns, and how to propagate CRUD operations throughout a distributed stack (including versioning nuances).
? Experience operating a large-scale Elasticsearch cluster
? Familiarity with data pipeline orchestration tools (e.g. Apache Airflow, Apache NiFi, Apache Camel)
? Familiarity in the AWS ecosystem of services (e.g. S3, DynamoDB, Lake Formation, EMR, EKS, RDS, Kinesis, EC2, Lambda, CloudWatch)
? Familiarity with Reactive Programming (e.g. Project Reactor, Akka, RxJava)
? Experience with Kubernetes and/or Docker container environment
? Ability to identify external data specifications for common data representations
? Experience building monitoring and alerting mechanisms for data pipelines
? Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g. Terraform, Cloudwatch, Ansible, Puppet)
? Contributor to an open source community BTI360 is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
