    Job Description

    The Oculoplastic Surgeon reports to the Chief of Surgery at VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines, Iowa. Oculoplastic surgery is a subspecialty of Ophthalmology. Physician is responsible for performing invasive and non-invasive surgical services as established in the current delineation of clinical privileges. The oculoplastic surgeon will provide oversight to ophthalmology residents who perform or assist with surgical cases.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/14/2020.

    Basic Requirements:

    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.

    Preferred Experience: Expertise in invasive and non-invasive oculoplastic surgical services.
    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
    Physical Requirements: Daily intermittent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and carrying of lightweight items required. Rigid deadlines and need for high degree of accuracy periodically becomes stressful.
    All physicians may be required to maintain current BLS certification and ACLS certification as indicated per medical center policy.

    Responsibilities:

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Common duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

    • Provide care of the Veterans' medical needs by performing examination, surgical consultation, and develop treatment and follow-up plans.
    • Responsible for the evaluation and management of clinical patients in the outpatient setting, performing surgery as appropriate (outpatient only) and managing patients post-operatively.
    • The physician spends most of their time on the following: Ophthalmic Surgery; Attending on Surgical Service and; Caring for patients in the outpatient Surgical clinic.
    • Provide ongoing patient and family education throughout the course of treatment.
    • Expertise in invasive and non-invasive surgical services as established in their current delineation of privileges.
    • Responsible for completing patient encounters, notes, and correctly coding visits in accordance with coding guidelines. Documentation must be completed within VHA guidelines and By Laws.
    • Provider will participate in discharge planning and interdisciplinary patient care plan activities in relation to inpatients.
    • Maintain skills, proficiencies, and professional knowledge necessary to maintain licensure and to perform clinical scope of practice.
    • Patient care may be delivered via face-to-face, Tele-health, or phone consultation, as well as consultation via face-to-face encounters, My Healthy Vet (email via computerized patient record chart), and electronic-consults.
    • Required to attend staff meetings, serve on committees, teams, workgroups, and peer reviews as requested.

    Work Schedule: Typical work hours will be determined based on clinic work-load to accommodate both medical and surgical needs. On call duties will be assigned as necessary and appropriate.
