Senior Food Scientist
Hormel Foods Sales, LLC is seeking a full-time Senior Food Scientist at our offices in Hayward, CA. Duties: Lead and coordinate the daily activities of assigned technicians/scientists to accomplish project goals, including training on equipment, instruction in formulation/process, and meeting regulatory requirements. Serve as a subject matter expert and provide technical support to internal and external customers including problem solving and providing technical and scientific advice and mentoring junior scientists. Identify, investigate, evaluate, verify, and appraise new technologies and services contributing to improved operational efficiencies or yields. Create or modify products or processes or has application from a non-food technology. Collaborate with outside vendors/copackers on assigned tasks to meet project deliverables. Conduct physical, chemical, and organoleptic testing. Work with QA to ensure proper documentation of releases of product/raw materials, vendor audits, shelf life testing, and specifications. Develop nutritional analyses and nutritional database management. Manage vendor and product sample cuttings, communication, and feedback. Assist, formulate, and manage product development and technical services projects to meet and exceed objectives. Assist and/or manage the commercialization of products. Maintain compliance with all applicable Federal, State, local, and company regulations, policies, and procedures, including compliance with established standards involving sanitation, good manufacturing practices, housekeeping, safety programs, and HACCP (hazard analysis and critical control points) programs. Maintain laboratory organization of samples, supplies, and storage. Maintain diligent document/documentation management and laboratory notebook. Facilitate and/or participate in technical team meetings and safety trainings. Lead innovation platforms to meet and exceed company's strategic focus, products and services, timing, and objectives. Support cross-functional groups and manage projects through Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Sales, and Marketing. Support long-term strategies and manage processes, projects, and resources (internal/external) to achieve organization/department objectives. Support solutions that minimize labor cost while maintaining product integrity. Other responsibilities/duties as required. This position will supervise one to two Food Scientists. Requires 25% domestic and international travel for plant trials, product commercialization, attending trainings, and conferences. This position requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Poultry Science, Food Science, Animal Science, Meat Science, or related field and 7 years of related experience. In the alternative, the employer will accept a Master's degree or equivalent in Poultry Science, Food Science, Animal Science, Meat Science, or related field and 2 years of related experience. Must also have 24 months of demonstrated ability with each of the following: Technical skills related to meat/protein functionality/chemistry and meat processing/product development; Conducting troubleshooting and root cause analysis for product maintenance issues; Understanding and complying with USDA rules and regulations; Applying knowledge of functional food ingredients and applications in meat products; and Understanding meat pilot plant processing equipment design and its functioning. Will accept experience gained before, during, or after Master's program. Candidates will be required to pass a drug test before beginning employment.
