We are expanding and are in need of an attorney admitted in NJ and NY with prior litigation experience, though entry-level candidates will be considered. Responsibilities will include preparing and drafting pleadings, preparing discovery and dispositive motions, conducting depositions, communicating with expert witnesses, attending motion hearings and court conferences. Candidates are expected to have excellent writing skills.

The Piscataway GEICO Staff Counsel office is seeking to hire a senior level attorney, in good standing, with a minimum of 7 years of litigation experience, including insurance defense or personal injury. Experience in the State of New Jersey is preferred.
Primary Position Objective
Under general supervision, MANAGES all Staff Counsel office activities relating to the defense of lawsuits against GEICO insureds in liability suits, and on behalf of GEICO in subrogation, Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Underinsured Motorist (UIM), filed in courts.
MANAGES subordinates in all activities relating to the defense of lawsuits and against GEICO insureds in liability cases, and on behalf of GEICO in UM/UIM and Subrogation suits.
INTERVIEWS and/or APPROVES job applicants for employment. CONDUCTS and/or REVIEWS associate Performance Appraisals. INITIATES or APPROVES salary adjustments, performance ratings, and other personnel changes. COUNSELS associates and TAKES disciplinary action or TERMINATES the employment of associates as appropriate.
REPRESENTS GEICO insureds in liability suits filed in courts of limited and unlimited jurisdiction and UM/UIM arbitrations.
RESEARCHES laws and PREPARES legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda. RENDERS opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department. PREPARES and HANDLES pleadings, motions, and discovery, to include depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath. DEFENDS all assigned matters by trial, arbitration, or mediation, as applicable. MEETS deadlines to respond to pleadings, and correspondence; appears timely in court, arbitrations, depositions, meetings and other scheduled matters.
TRAINS and SUPERVISES less experienced attorneys and support staff, including assisting attorneys as first and second chair counsel, and/or observing attorneys at trials and arbitrations; MONITORS all applicable bar requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements; CONDUCTS file audits and PROVIDES feedback on quality of file handling and expense management.
TRAVELS to attend trials, hearings, arbitrations, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
REVIEWS office reports and IMPLEMENTS changes to improve office statistics, including timeliness of reports to clients, productivity reports, client and claims survey results, closure ratio, dependability ratio, and subrogation results.
ADHERES to the GEICO Code of Conduct, company policies, and operating principles.
MEETS attendance standard of the business location to perform necessary job functions and to facilitate interaction with subordinates and management.

Must demonstrate successful performance in handling trial responsibility for cases of significant severity and complexity.
Must have the following education and experience:
Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in the State of New Jersey, and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE).
Management experience preferred.

The legal team works closely with other departments throughout the company, but is also very focused on internal teamwork and professional development opportunities. Our Sr. Trial Attorney provides legal representation to insureds of the Company in defense of litigated claims. Provides advice to the claims department of the Company and represents the Company in certain litigated matters. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
This is an in office based position, working 1 day a week from home, handling cases predominantly in New Jersey.
Dictates/prepares pleadings, motions, briefs, letters, memoranda, reports, articles, etc. using the Company's legal case management software, dictation and voice recognition equipment.
Engages in various forms of paper discovery practice and conducts depositions and other pre-trial examinations.
Communicates with, meets and regularly updates the client and claims personnel regarding the status of pending matters. Communicates with opposing counsel, the courts and others as needed.. Communication media include telephone, US mail, e-mail, Blackberry service, etc.
Researches issues using Westlaw, Lexis and other computer/web based data sources, as well as using legal treatises, law reporters and other library materials.
Provides support services to claims, underwriting and other adjunct departments in the form of legal opinions, recommendations and digests of recent developments in decisional and statutory law.
Controls and directs clerical activity, in accordance with office protocol, necessary to support function of position.
Reports to managing attorney concerning status of matters and provides other information as requested. May supervise other attorneys in the office and may also provide managerial assistance, such as assignment of new files.
Tries cases to conclusion before judges, juries and other triers of fact.
Travels to depositions, court appearances, claims and client meetings, and other events as necessary. Car travel represents approximately 20% of employee's time.
Engages in other activity as directed by the managing attorney.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Explorer or similar required. Typing skill required. Legal case management software experience preferred.
Excellent customer service, writing and oral communication skills required.
Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing.
Juris Doctor from ABA accredited law school required. Member in good standing of the Bar of the jurisdiction required.
At least 15 years legal experience in the jurisdiction required. Trial of at least 15 matters to conclusion before trier of fact preferred.
