The Technology Engineer - Cloud Engineer role is to develop, deploy, and support enterprise solutions on Amazon Web Services (AWS) with focus on solution design, cost savings and Infrastructure as Code automation.
The Technology Engineer is involved in the full technology life cycle and responsible for designing, coding, configuring, testing, implementing and supporting IaaS and PaaS in AWS. Technology Engineers work closely with Architects, Analysts, Product Owners and Product Managers to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and physical design of technical solutions. Technology Engineers may be assigned to either implementation or support functions. Implementation involves creating new technology based solutions, whereas support involves upgrades, maintenance or issue resolution to existing technology solutions.
Required Education and Experience:
This is a multi-level position and the successful candidate/employee in this Technology Engineer Job Family will progress as part of a growth series for grades 26 to 27. For Grades 28 these will not be part of the growth series but career pathing and the successful candidate will be based on job performance, skills, knowledge and experience.
Associate Technology Engineer, Grade 26:
•Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field •2-4 years of professional technology solution engineering •Demonstrated technology solution ownership and adoption, projects or other work experiences. •Participates in analysis of end-user needs and designs. May configure, develop and test low to medium complexity technology solutions to satisfy demand. Gathers information to aid build versus buy analysis for business demand. •Partners with business analysts to translate business requirements to technology solution requirements of mostly low complexity technology solutions. •Demonstrated track record of implementing technology solutions using structured methodologies such as agile (SCRUM, Kanban etc.) and waterfall.
Technology Engineer, Grade 27
•Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field •4-6 years of professional technology solution engineering •Demonstrated leadership capabilities through technology solution ownership and adoption, projects or other work experiences. •Demonstrated track record of translating business outcomes, business requirements and technical requirements into technical designs for new technology solutions or enhancements to existing technology solutions, while following architectural standards and organizational policies •Demonstrated track record of implementing technology solutions using structured methodologies such as agile (SCRUM, Kanban etc.) and waterfall.
Senior Technology Engineer, Grade 28
•Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field •6-8 years of professional technology solution engineering •Demonstrated good leadership capabilities through technology solution ownership and adoption, projects or other work experiences. •Good track record of translating business outcomes, business requirements and technical requirements into technical designs for new technology solutions or enhancements to existing technology solutions, while following architectural standards and organizational policies •Good track record of implementing technology solutions using structured methodologies such as agile (SCRUM, Kanban etc.) and waterfall.
Primary Responsibilities are:
•Design, configuration, development, documentation and testing of technology solutions to meet business or technology requirements. Evaluation of existing technology solutions to determine fit and recommendation of technology alternatives. Collaboration with other individuals to ensure proper integration of the new technology solution with the existing technology solutions. •Analysis of end users' needs, business and technology requirements. Translation of these requirements into technology solution capabilities and design. Alternatively, using the user needs, business and technology knowledge to peer review designs, implementation plans, software code, configuration settings or other artifacts, to ensure technology solution being created by others meets the user needs, business and technology requirements. •Provides support toward resolution of escalated support tickets. May perform the needed analysis to identify root cause of reported incidents, identify the short and long term remediation for the identified incidents.
Specific responsibilities include:
•Developing, deploying, documenting, testing, enhancing and supporting infrastructure solutions in AWS to meet business or infrastructure requirements. The work required may include various levels of complexity and business impact. •Develop and deploy solutions following the principles of AWS Well-Architected Framework. •Automation of Infrastructure-as-Code using CloudFormation and Lambda Functions written in Python. •Maintain a focus on Cloud related costs, reviewing usage & billing and develop effective solutions to minimize cost profile. •Evaluate existing technology solutions & platforms and provides recommendations for improving technology performance by conducting gap analysis, identifying feasible alternative solutions and assisting in the scope of needed modifications •Collaborate with all stakeholders such as architects, product owners, development, operations, cybersecurity and infrastructure to integrate applications and infrastructure. •Ensures that the design and technology solution implementation meets IT security and QA standards. Suggests fixes to issues by doing a thorough analysis of root cause and impact of any defect(s). •Assist in development of project plans and schedules. •Serve as a subject matter expert in the area of responsibility. •Creates technology solutions based on a disciplined process. Works on tasks that require skills in multiple technical environments and knowledge of a specific business area. •Conducts design and change record peer reviews in support of upcoming changes. •Provides support toward resolution of escalated support tickets. Applies operation break fixes and performs other proactive maintenance activities until permanent solutions can be implemented. Supports and participates in the solution deployment process for new functionality/subsystems/modules, upgrades, updates and fixes to the production environment. •Documents capabilities and any changes to new or existing components and associated test activities and test results. •Makes solutions and solution parts production-ready by following the standard change management processes, completing required forms, following procedures, completing version control documents, etc. •Keeps informed of technical advances and best practices in the industry. •Required on-call rotation for two weeks per quarter for incidental outages.
Job Specific Qualifications
•Active AWS Technical or Specialty Certification required or ability to demonstrate competency in AWS Solutions •Understanding of AWS solutions and experience in deploying public cloud in a hybrid environment •Experience developing, deploying, and supporting Infrastructure as Code (IAC): •Hands-on experience using CloudFormation •Experience documenting technical solutions and system process flow techniques •Ability to create both technical and non-technical end-user documentation •Ability to work independently and multi-task effectively •Demonstrated understanding of projects from the perspective of client/user, business, cybersecurity and technology day to day operations •Flexible and willing to accept a change in priorities as necessary •Strong analytical ability and attention to detail •Excellent problem solving skills •Ability to learn new business and technical concepts •Strong oral and written communication skills •Good facilitation skills •Strong judgment and management skills •Leadership, technical teamwork and interpersonal skills •Ability to foster working relationships with the team, IT Management and Client departments, •Understanding of technology architecture, technology platforms and ability to explain technical concepts to the business users in the context of business requirements.
•Configuration and deployment experience with the following: •AWS IaaS technologies (EC2, EBS, S3, Config, etc.) •Deep understanding of security (IAM Roles/Polices/Group/Users, S3 Bucket Policies, Security Groups and NACLs) •Network functions such as Direct Connect, Internet Gateway, Transit Gateway, Client VPN •High Availability and Disaster recovery implementations (Auto Scaling, Multi-AZ, Multi-Region, etc.) •Graduate degree or MBA •Experience with SaaS Tools (VMware CloudHealth, SpotInst, DataDog, and/or CloudEndure) •Experience with deployment and configuration of AWS Security Services (Security Hub, GuardDuty, Inspector, Macie, etc.) •Hands-on Experience building Lambda functions using Python •Familiarity with utilizing CI/CD tools in AWS •Experience with ServiceNow Cloud Management Platform •Experience with GitHub •Experience performing within an Agile team following Scrum and/or KanBan methodologies •Microsoft Azure hands-on experience designing, implementing, and/or supporting
