TITLE: Cake Decorator -- Bakery Clerk
BASIC PURPOSE AND FUNCTION: Decorates cakes, cookies, pastries and other baked goods for sale to customers. Assists customers with special orders. Provides fast, friendly, personalized customer service. Candidates must be available to work within the hours directed by the store director to serve our guests during peak business time periods and within the schedules of the collective bargaining agreement.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with an emphasis on providing fast, friendly, courteous customer service. Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques via telephone and one-on-one customer contact.
Decorates cakes by freehand and with decorating kits. Colors icing. Ices donuts. Helps customers with special orders for decorated baked goods. Uses related work aides including: decorating tubes and kits, box knives, knives, scrapers, spatulas, microwave, cake comb, photo cake machine. Operates mixers.
Responsible for staying informed on the price, ingredients, and availability of bakery products, especially advertised merchandise. May be required to order decorating products such as cake pads and icing.
Ensures proper cleanliness and sanitation of decorating work aides and work area. Ensures a safe work environment.
Responsible for pulling out of date cakes and maintaining full, fresh cake case. Also required to maintain all varieties of back-up cake in the freezer.
Responsible for performing all duties with honesty and integrity.

SKILLS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to be friendly, courteous, tactful and maintain composure in dealing with customers and co-workers. Must possess good communication skills and be able to read and follow written instructions.
Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to frequently lift icing buckets weighing up to approximately 20 lbs., and ability to occasionally lift buckets weighing up to approximately 50 lbs. Ability to frequently reach and maneuver product filled trays within the range of floor level to overhead. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, twist and turn frequently. Manual dexterity, good eye-hand coordination, and good balance are necessary. Upper extremity strength and endurance required for continuous squeezing of decorating tubes throughout the work shift. Ability to work and move at a production rate of speed. Ability to push and pull fully loaded four-wheel carts.
Mental alertness is necessary to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities. Requires knowledge of basic math and color mixing formulas. Requires creative ability and the ability to identify colors. Must be able to learn taste, content and perishability of products, safety and sanitation procedures and department policies and procedures.
Ability to use trash compactor & bailer.
Exposure to potential hazards exists with respect to mixers, and work aides necessary to perform job duties. Frequent exposure for brief periods of time to -20° Fahrenheit while handling products in the freezer. Working conditions consists of a Bakery Department production area in a temperature controlled store environment. Hands are frequently exposed to water and cleaning agents.
