              Description

Responsible for the daily operational leadership of the Department of Energy's Hanford Nuclear Site's fire protection program. The Hanford Fire Department (HFD) is an all hazards emergency response agency tasked with protecting the people, facilities and environment on the 586 square mile Hanford Federal Reserve. HFD is comprised of four divisions: the Operations Division tasked with emergency response activities to include providing licensed Advanced Life Support (ALS) transport services; the Hanford Fire Marshal's Office tasked with providing oversight and compliance enforcement of the Department of Energy's Orders, NFPA Fire Codes, and Washington State Administrative Codes in a nuclear environment; the Training and Certification Division providing nationally recognized International Fire Service Accreditation College (IFSAC) certifications, tasked with maintaining department personnel's emergency medical certifications (EMT and Paramedic) as well as certifications associated with hazardous materials response to the technician level, technical rescue certifications and wildland firefighting certifications. Additionally, the department's Fire Systems Maintenance Division, test, maintains and repairs fire suppression and detection systems and the Support Services Division is tasked with providing respiratory protection services, fire extinguisher services to the entire Hanford Site as well as logistical and budgetary services to the HFD organization.

The location and geography of the Hanford Site results in the organization's primary fire threat being of a natural ground cover nature with total acreage burned between 10,000 to 100,00+ acres annually. Additionally, the unique mission of the DOE's Hanford Site necessitates the ability to apply fire codes, administrative codes and federal regulations to the needs of the nuclear industry.

The Fire Chief executes the HFD mission with the assistance of a diverse staff of uniformed and non-uniformed personnel which includes a Deputy Fire Chief, multiple Assistant Chiefs, and senior level Managers. The Operations Division staffs three geographically located fire stations whose personnel are assigned to three (3) platoons working a 48/96 schedule.

The Hanford Fire Department is an element of the Hanford Emergency Services organization which includes Hanford Patrol, Hanford Fire and Emergency Management. The Fire Chief reports directly to the Vice President of Emergency Services.
