    POSITIONAssociate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Nuclear Science & Technology (NS&T), position is located in Idaho Falls, IdahoREPORTS TOLaboratory Director, Idaho National Laboratory (INL)BACKGROUNDINL, located in Idaho Falls, Idaho, is the nation s lead national laboratory for nuclear energy research. As a Federally Funded Research and Development Center, INL is managed and operated for DOE by Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC (BEA). Today, over 5000 INL staff apply their talents to a $1.5B a year research enterprise dedicated to delivering multidisciplinary, multiprogram science and technology solutions that address global energy and security challenges.As the U.S. leader for advanced nuclear energy research, development, and demonstration (RD&D), INL leverages an unmatched combination of nuclear energy test bed facilities to execute its mission to discover, demonstrate, and secure innovative nuclear energy solutions, other low-carbon energy options, and critical infrastructure. INL combines basic research, applied science and engineering, and a problem-solving approach to pursue its vision to change the world s energy future and secure our nation s critical infrastructure. To achieve this vision, the Nuclear Science & Technology (NS&T) directorate leads RD&D for the advanced reactor technologies and improved fuel cycle elements needed to sustain the existing fleet and expand deployment of nuclear energy.More than 450 researchers and staff in the NS&T directorate deliver advancements that address international and national challenges related to nuclear energy RD&D. NS&T also provides unique talent and collaborative integrated science and technology capabilities that support INL s energy and environmental, national and homeland security, advanced test reactor, and materials and fuel complex mission outcomes. NS&T s annual budget authority for fiscal year 2020 was more than $400M.INL and the NS&T directorate have built a highly respected, world-class nuclear RD&D program delivering on its role as the U.S. leader in nuclear energy research. In the years to come, INL will demonstrate advanced nuclear reactors for civilian and government applications and will continue to lead the national dialog and strategy to advance the use of nuclear energy and associated fuel cycle technologies. INL aims to provide technology solutions to complex problems using our unique and world-class experimental capabilities, applied state-of-the-art modeling and simulation tools, and integrated expertise in nuclear systems design, analyses, and licensing. To further innovative nuclear energy solutions, INL, within NS&T, leads the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC). NRIC provides resources to test, demonstrate, and assess performance of new nuclear technologies, critical steps that must be completed before many are available commercially. NS&T also leads the Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) to enhance the collaborations among the federally and privately funded efforts for advancing the use of safe, secure and reliable nuclear energy within the national and global energy portfolio. In addition, NS&T focuses on globally maintaining and enhancing U.S. leadership in nuclear energy and associated fuel cycle technologies.The NS&T ALD will advance a unified science and technology strategy for INL by collaborating with other INL research directorates, namely Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC), Advanced Test Reactor (ATR), National & Homeland Security (N&HS), and Energy & Environment Science & Technology (EES&T). This position will also seek to develop strategic partnerships with partner national laboratories, universities, other national and international RD&D organizations and private companies to advance the goals of the U.S. nuclear energy strategy, and provide leadership in developing and implementing integrated strategic objectives and tactics to advance nuclear energy RD&D and INL s Laboratory agenda.JOB DESCRIPTIONBEA is seeking an accomplished leader to serve as the next ALD of NS&T at INL who can articulate an inspiring vision and guide the directorate toward an exciting future. The ALD will deliver new nuclear science discoveries and nuclear energy technologies to advance the mission of the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE). Additionally, the ALD partners with the INL Laboratory Director, the two Deputy Laboratory Directors, and the other four technical Associate Laboratory Directors on strategy development and implementation and overall laboratory leadership. The next ALD will have the following attributes based on education and experience: displays strategic leadership, demonstrates the ability to lead a diverse, complex, technical organization, demonstrates sound program development and management acumen with a commitment to high standards, persistence, and practical leadership and management skills, able to negotiate a complex political landscape, and can work effectively with DOE-NE, other DOE offices (including Naval Reactors), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), industry, and other stakeholders to represent INL s total institutional capabilities for nuclear energy, clean energy, and infrastructure protection.The ideal candidate will:Build Collaboration and Partnerships Build and strengthen partnerships and connections with DOE, particularly advancing and facilitating partnership with the DOE-NE, national laboratories, technology end users, industry, universities, and government collaborators and regulators. Create and drive vision through leadership, exploration, boldness, and resolve. Manage strategic and cultural change that aligns staff around the Laboratory s vision, mission, and values. Be an authentic and credible communicator who can represent INL on a national and international stage while influencing INL s research mission.Set Strategy and Deliver Performance Lead in formulating and implementing Laboratory strategy that continues to position INL as the nation s lead laboratory for nuclear energy research and development.
