Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) is an internationally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a network of over 10,000 medical students and residents around the world.
Founded by medical students in 1993 as a response to the almost complete deficit of abortion education in their medical training, MSFC has filled a unique niche in the abortion rights movement. We work to ensure that medical students and trainees are educated about all aspects of reproductive health care, including abortion.
Currently, MSFC has more than 220 chapters around the world. With abortion training still lacking in medical school curricula, MSFC members organize to change institutional policies and broaden opportunities for all their fellow students to receive family planning education.
MSFC supports any medical student or physician in training seeking abortion and family planning education. MSFC works to bring family planning and abortion education to medical students. MSFC recognizes that sexual health as defined by the WHO is a basic human right. Upholding this right is implicit in our approach to promoting comprehensive reproductive healthcare. We believe that all people should have access to health services that allow them to lead safe, healthy, sexual lives consistent with their own personal and cultural values.
Medical Students for Choice is looking for a culturally humble, inclusive, innovative candidate with experience in movement building to lead this dynamic and high-functioning organization as Executive Director. The Executive Director is responsible for bringing seasoned leadership, vision, collaboration, and creativity to the ongoing growth and sustainability of the organization.
The Executive Director will work in a fast-paced environment that requires a management style that facilitates consensus building and supports collective oversight. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization's consistent achievement of its mission, organization‐wide development, and financial objectives.
Overall, the Executive Director is responsible for the management and staff leadership of MSFC. Specific responsibilities include:
- Providing movement-building vision and direction for Medical Students for Choice future growth, working with the Board and staff to implement and refine the organization's strategic priorities.
- Ensuring that an equity lens, including a racial justice focus, is applied to organizational operations, including internal processes and infrastructure.
- Ensuring organizational focus; clear goals, tactics, milestones, and metrics for success; and the necessary systems to track and share critical programmatic, operational, and financial information across the organization.
- Develop operational efficiencies of systems, processes, and personnel designed to accommodate growth objectives.
- Provide timely and transparent information to the Board of Directors on the condition of the organization and any important factors influencing it.
- Work with the Board President to ensure strong board leadership, partnership and collaboration, ensuring open lines of communication, high levels of engagement, and the advancement of the mission.
- Support the Board leadership in managing the board process of meeting schedules, committee establishment, setting annual board goals, and conducting an annual board evaluation.
- Assist the Board in its efforts to diversify membership and ensure a comprehensive orientation for new members.
Finance and Administration
- Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices, including review of financial statements, management of cash flow, and knowledge of internal control systems.
- Work with the staff and the board in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
- Jointly, with the president and secretary of the board of directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.
- Ensure official records and documents are maintained, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Oversee and participate with the Board of Directors in the development of long-term strategies consistent with MSFC's mission, theory of change, and strategic plan.
- Provide leadership in developing program, organizational, financial, learning and evaluation, and media plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.
- Ensure that the organization makes consistent and timely progress toward its mission.
- Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.
Fundraising and External Communications
- Ensure that adequate funds are available from diversified funding sources to permit the organization to carry out its work.
- Provide strategic direction and work with development staff to annually prepare a fund development plan with clear goals, activities, delegation of responsibilities, and timeframes for accomplishing goals.
- Serve as the primary liaison for media contacts, foundations and major donors, maintaining and prospectively cultivating positive relationships with funders, and staying up-to-date on developments in the funding landscape that might affect the organization.
- Ensure the promotion of organizational activities to advance MSFC programs and goals, including overseeing timely updates to external-facing communications such as the website and annual report.
- Ensure the establishment of sound working relationships and collaboration with local, national and international organizations that support reproductive rights, health, and justice.
Organizational and People Management
- Responsible for the hiring, development, and release of an effective team of staff and volunteers.
- Ensure that staff roles and procedures are clear, including development of job descriptions, work plans, regular performance evaluations, and maintenance of sound human resource practices, such as a staff policies and procedures manual, grievance policy, and crisis management plan.
- Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to staff and members.
- Maintain a workplace culture that attracts, retains, and motivates a diverse staff, deepening and strengthening a culture of inclusion and equity within the team and across the entire organization.
- Ensure alignment between staff work plans and organization-wide goals and strategies.
For this pivotal role, MSFC seeks a visionary leader who is deeply and demonstrably committed to the mission of securing the fundamental human right to reproductive health and access to abortion services. The Board welcomes a visionary leader who is authentic, inclusive, and intersectional while unafraid to take calculated risks and make hard choices.
The ideal candidate will offer the following skills, experiences, and characteristics:
- Understanding of reproductive rights, health, and justice issues, and firm commitment to destigmatize abortion and openly advocate for abortion access.
- Five to seven years of leadership-level experience with nonprofit administration, which includes team leadership, program management, and/or organizational development demonstrating senior-level responsibility in a closely related grassroots social justice field.
- Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget with an equity lens, including a racial justice focus.
- Demonstrated track record of leading with creativity and innovation.
- Demonstrated experience leading and building teams to develop and implement tactical plans to fulfill a broader vision or mission.
- Proven track record in fundraising across multiple disciplines and varied income streams, with a commitment to incorporating an organizational culture of philanthropy.
- Strong emotional intelligence and self-motivation, with the ability to lead with and foster an environment and culture that generates constructive problem-solving, transparent communication, flexibility, and a "can-do" attitude.
- Demonstrated experience building authentic and effective partnerships and coalitions among organizations and student groups working at all levels, from the grassroots to the international level.
- An independent, confident leader who is comfortable supporting a deeply committed staff and Board of Directors which is comprised of 51% Medical Students.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders by building trust, buy-in, and effective, authentic relationships, including managing conflict and providing consistent constructive feedback in a timely manner.
- Strong financial literacy and experience managing multi-million-dollar program budgets.
- Superior written skills with special attention to detail required.
- Experience in serving as an organizational liaison for media, at conferences, and other highly visible opportunities.
This is a full-time position. MSFC offers medical, dental, and vision insurance; a 403b retirement plan including employer match; and generous paid vacation, personal, and sick leave, along with paid parental leave. The salary range for this opportunity is $140,000 - $150,000.
