                                  Job Description

                                  POSITION OBJECTIVE

                                  Working under the limited direction of the Director of Clinical Operations, the medical lab technician will be responsible for obtaining, handling, processing, and analyzing clinical laboratory specimens to provide medical diagnostic information from patients accessing care at University Health and Counseling Services. The technician is a term position for one year.

                                  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

                                  1. Obtain clinical specimens for diagnostic testing following OSHA/CLIA standards, including but not limited to blood and oropharyngeal swabs. Perform diagnostic laboratory tests including but not limited to chemistry, toxicology, hematology, and microbiology. Identify and communicate abnormal or positive test results by alerting supervisory personnel and the ordering medical provider. (55%)
                                  2. Match medical provider orders with specimen labeling and sorts specimens; checks labeling, logs specimens. Maintain quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting, calibrating equipment, and monitoring quality control measures and protocols. (15%)
                                  3. Arrange, coordinate, and assure accuracy of reports for delivery in electronic medical record. (10%)
                                  4. Manage laboratory supplies and inventory. (10%)
                                  5. Adhere to strict infection control policies including universal precautions and the use of personal protective equipment according to University Health Services, CDC, OSHA, and CLIA guidelines. Keep work surfaces clean and orderly. Contribute to a safe and secure work environment by following established standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations. Maintain patient confidentiality, HIPPA/FERPA, and other regulatory agencies by keeping laboratory results and information confidential. Adhere to professional standards, CWRU University Student Health and Counseling Services policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local requirements. Maintain a safe work environment by complying with all CLIA and OSHA safety guidelines. (10%)

                                  NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

                                  CONTACTS

                                  Department: Regular contact with department staff to collaborate with health care team members.

                                  University: Occasional contact with university colleagues to refer students to obtain laboratory specimens.

                                  External: Contact with external laboratory staff to ensure reliable flow of results from external laboratories such as laboratory services at University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Metro Health. Moderate contact with lab equipment and servicing companies to maintain laboratory equipment.

                                  Students: Frequent and direct contact with students in the clinical setting to obtain clinical specimens.

                                  SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

                                  None

                                  QUALIFICATIONS

                                  Experience: 2 to 5 year experience, preferably in the clinical area of a physician's office, health care facility and/or clinical laboratory setting.

                                  Education and Licensing: Minimum of high school education. Associate degree in medical laboratory services preferred. Certification by AMT or ASCP preferred.

                                  REQUIRED SKILLS

                                  1. Possess clinical knowledge and skills in phlebotomy and obtaining and labeling clinical specimens such as blood, urine, oropharyngeal swabs.
                                  2. Ability in analyzing clinical specimens such as blood, urine, saliva, oropharyngeal, and genitourinary specimens for diagnostic results.
                                  3. Ability in analyzing clinical specimens with appropriate analytes and commercial platforms that include but are not limited to commercially available and CLIA waived or certified PCR, and antigen processing platforms.
                                  4. Possess clinical aptitude to identify abnormal or positive test results.
                                  5. Communicate clearly with medical providers regarding abnormal or positive test results in a timely manner.
                                  6. Demonstrated ability to accurately enter clinical test results into an electronic health record.
                                  7. Adhere to all University Health Services safety and infection control policies and procedures.
                                  8. Maintain appropriate certification and continuing education through AMT or ASCP if applicable.
                                  9. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage time appropriately.
                                  10. Active listening to facilitate patient care along with excellent communication skills.
                                  11. Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team process.

                                  WORKING CONDITIONS

                                  The employee will be exposed to bloodborne and airborne pathogens. Personal protective equipment will be provided according to OSHA/CDC and University Health Services infection control policies and will include, when appropriate, an appropriate mask, face shield, gown, and gloves.
