Spokane Community College is accepting applications to develop an applicant pool of qualified candidates for part-time, non-permanent sign language interpreter positions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interpret and/or transliterate classroom instruction (lecture, discussion, lab), college related events beyond the classroom (ie: meetings with instructors) and campus sponsored activities. Interpreting both voice-to-sign and sign-to voice.
Interpret and/or transliterate for job-related needs of Deaf and/or Hard-of-Hearing staff.
Using consumer and colleague feedback, assess effectiveness of interpretation and prepare accordingly in order to gain understanding of relevant concepts needed to effectively interpret in specialized settings.
Work collaboratively with other sign language interpreters and faculty to facilitate learning for deaf students and, as needed, address need for note-takers and NCR paper.
Oversee the work of practicum student interpreters in training as applicable.
Adhere to the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Professional Code of Conduct.
Keep records as required by Disability Support Services and network with other staff members to maintain the flow of information.
Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (Minimum Qualifications)
Associate's degree from an accredited institution.
Completion of an accredited Interpreter Training Program.
Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of CCS.
The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, community and technical college system.
A demonstrated understanding and value for the contributions that a diverse workforce can make to the success of the organization and the students we serve.
PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (Desirable Qualifications)
National Interpreter Certification (RID; NAD and/or EIPA level 4 or 5)
CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Because this position interprets in a variety of educational settings, the employee may be exposed to different working conditions. Frequent repetitive hand and wrist motions. Frequent need for oral and auditory communications. Occasionally kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and reach.
RATE OF PAY AND HOURS OF WORK
Level A $25.00, Level B $34.00, and Level C $40.00 per hour. Work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Total hours per year will not exceed 1050 per year. Position is eligible for paid sick leave benefit with an accrual rate of one hour for every 40 hours worked.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. In addition, the Community Colleges of Spokane maintains a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles. Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and educational environment. Requires criminal background check. If using personal vehicle for travel, proof of driver's license and car insurance required. Due to the amount of applications received, applications are kept on file for only six months. This position will be designated a bargaining unit position after a part time employee works 350 hours or more in any consecutive twelve month period.
