                      Job Description

                      Job Summary and Purpose:

                      The Lab Technician II provides support in the manufacture of vaccines through performance of cell, viral and bacterial culture processes.

                      Responsibilities and Key Duties:

                      Mastery of Lab Technician I responsibilities and key duties: Coachability, interpersonal relations & ability to foster teamwork, initiative, thoroughness & attention to detail, flexibility, analytical thinking  

                      Perform, in a proficient manner, various lab procedures as assigned. These lab procedures include but are not limited to:          

                      • Small and large scale nonviral and viral tissue culture and aerobic and anaerobic bacterial culture operations using antibiotic free media and/or observation, inoculation, harvest, inactivation, precipitation, decantation, and storage processes in accordance with approved procedures
                      • Inactivated fraction, modified live virus, and live virus antigen pooling and bulking procedures    
                      • Preparation of solutions and equipment            
                      • Processing and cultivation of primary cell cultures in antibiotic free media             
                      • Lyophilization activity, including loading, cycle initiation, removal of product, capping, inventory, storage, and equipment cleaning
                      • Filling procedures for inactivated, modified live virus, and/or diluent products
                      • Disinfect and clean laboratories and equipment      
                      • Maintain frozen seed inventory
                      • Maintain a record of limited instances of deviations due to “negligence"
                      • Perform, in a proficient manner, various ancillary activities, as assigned.

                      Ancillary activities include but are not limited to:

                      • Ensure SOPs and batch records are followed by all participating Techs in group procedures when assigned as the Lead of the group procedure
                      • Identify opportunities and suggestions for improvement
                      • Submit deviations that are well written and contain all of the needed information to perform an impact assessment
                      • Submit actionable MWOs that identify maintenance items that need attention
                      • Actively participate during group discussions (i.e., kickâ??offs, antigen meetings, etc.) in order to help identify positive solutions to problems and opportunities for improvement
                      • When identifying potential opportunities for improvement activities, take steps (e.g., submit a QWDR, participate in change control, etc.) to resolve the issue
                      • Ensure all assigned tasks are completed daily
                      • Perform duties in accordance with applicable Standard Operating Procedures and make suggestions for changes as needed
                      • Accurately complete all necessary documentation in accordance with good documentation practices

                      Tier 1 select agents and toxins (SA/T) authorized personnel specific responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:

                      • Successful completion of a security risk assessment and attainment and maintenance of approval from FBI CJIS to access tier 1 select agents and toxins
                      • Successful completion of preaccess suitability and ongoing suitability evaluations and attainment and maintenance of approval from the RO and ARO to access tier 1 select agents and toxins
                      • Operating in compliance with federal regulations related to the possession, use, and transfer of tier 1 select agents and toxins in accordance with established SOPs, batch records, work instructions, training documents, etc.
                      • Additional duties as assigned

                      Technical / Functional Competencies:

                      Mastery of Lab Technician I responsibilities and key duties: Coachability, interpersonal relations & ability to foster teamwork, initiative, thoroughness & attention to detail, flexibility, analytical thinking  

                      Strong mathematical aptitude

                      Good communication skills, both verbal and written

                      Able to work overtime as needed

                      Knowledge of clean room behavior and aseptic technique

                      Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suites

                      Qualifications:  

                      Education Bachelor of Science or Associates degree in science related field, Microbiology a plus

                      Work Experience – Lab Technician I, Verona or equivalent

                      2 or more years of experience working with BSL2 or BSL3 agents required

                      Experience working in aseptic production environments required

                      Experience in FDA or EU GMP regulated environment desired.

                      Other (consider certifications, specialized knowledge and/or training, etc.) –

                      Physical Requirements:

                       Able to read, write legibly and understand English

                      Visual inspection

                       Able to lift up to 50 lbs on a periodic basis

                      Sit or stand for long periods of time

                      Able to safely manipulate large equipment and glassware

                      Level of education
