Responsible for insurance verification.
Schedule patients accurately within guidelines and protocols of practice
Scan copies of all registration forms and insurance cards and other required forms into EHR
Contacts insurance companies for benefit information and obtains information regarding copaymens/deductibles to be collected at time of service.
Contacts physician offices for necessary pre-authorizations as required.
Refers all self-pay patients to the financial counselor.
Observe professional ethics in maintaining confidential information acquired concerning the personal, financial, and medical or employment status of patients
and their families.
Receive, interview and registers patients using a positive and courteous tone.
Enter correct patient data into the computer terminals and make corrections to errors in records as necessary
Collect deposits on patient accounts and balances cash drawers
Assist arranging transportation for indigent patients.
Verify accuracy of forms and corrects errors.
Utilize screening and determination forms to assist eligible patients in obtaining financial aid.
Answer questions about patient bills.
Answers inbound phone calls from patients, scheduling etc.
Collect outstanding balances due.
Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Mail out patient information packets to new patients prior to initial visit.
Under the direction of the provider, contributes to the completion of a comprehensive assessment and documentation of patient/family needs.
Identifies significant changes in patient condition through data collection and reports them to the provider.
Understands and adheres to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the medical assistant role.
Under the direction of the provider, participates in planning and implementing care for patients within the scope of Medical Assisting practice.
Understands how to troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource. Demonstrates standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers.
Maintains necessary certifications as needed including annual required competency skills, utilizing these as resources for patient/family teaching and education under the direction of the provider.
Maintains a safe and supportive environment, by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner, ensuring availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.
Maintains skills per the departmental competency guidelines for cross training to meet patient care and day to day operational needs.This may include front desk workflows, i.e., patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, check-in/check-out and performing scribing duties on an as needed basis.
Travel to other facilities for Mercy Health providers, or adjusting hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the manager may also be required.
Must possess knowledge of surgery scheduling process in order to schedule for all providers within the practice. Including being alert of the appropriate location for provider and surgical case.
Perform Review of medications, medical history, lab and surgery instructions with patient while in the office and documents any discrepancies as needed.
Prepares Fax, sends and confirms with Mercy hospital scheduler of all surgeries, including all outlying centers as needed
Manages the referral entry, adding CPT and ICD codes as needed for pre-certifications
Obtain pre-certification for same day and next day surgeries
Responsible for scheduling of the patient's post-op visit as needed
Additional scheduling of mammotome /biopsy, U/S & biopsy, breast markings and nuclear medicine services may be needed for certain patients.
Responsible for contacting supply representatives for some specific surgeries that require additional supplies through a specific company.
Report IORT surgeries and ensure proper tracking with Director of Oncology Service Line.
Contact providers as needed when surgical candidates require a coordinated provider date.
Other duties include but not limited to ordering supplies appropriately. Assisting in coverage of other areas, including check in and check out of patients and answering telephones timely.
