JobSummary:

The Equipment Technician II performs a variety oftechnical, mechanical and general repair or maintenance on a wide variety ofvehicles and equipment. This is the second level of a three level series. It isdifferentiated from the first level in that tasks are of a higher level oftechnical difficulty involving diagnostic skills and major componentrebuilding.

Scopeof Responsibility:

The Equipment Technician II performs works on high valueequipment where proper preventive maintenance is necessary in order to preserveassets and avoid injuries attributable to equipment failure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Rebuilds or repairs major and minor components found on the different types of vehicles and equipment operated by various departments
  • Transports and Test drives equipment while performing vehicle safety inspections to ensure proper function
  • Equipment includes gasoline and diesel engine, pumps, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, conveyor systems, heating AC systems, electrical systems, electronic/computer systems, transmission preventive maintenances, gear cases, boiler systems, valves, etc
  • Diagnoses various equipment and vehicles when malfunction occurs by communicating with onboard computers and/or utilizing other testing devices
  • Makes recommendation to supervisor on appropriate repair procedures
  • Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment including safety compliance checks, in order to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Performs all phases of major and minor repair on the bodies of vehicles operated by the departments
  • Tasks include painting (application of single stage and base coat/clear coat systems), surface preparation, fiberglass repair, rust proofing and repair, window replacement, door and hood adjustment, frame and structural straightening, repair of unitized bodies and other duties of a similar level
  • Welds components to the vehicles as needed for function or safety
  • Installs and fabricates accessories and safety devices for specialty vehicles and equipment
  • Assists other Public Works Departments with operational duties as needed
  • Estimates time, parts, tools and equipment needed for repair; completes necessary forms and enters information into the fleet maintenance system to document any tasks performed. Confers with supervisor if significant amount of time and/or cost is likely to be involved
  • Fabricates parts and special tools needed to perform repairs or to rebuild equipment according to self-design or blue print specifications including welding metallic materials and operation of various metal working machinery, such as torches, welder, grinders, etc


Requirements




MinimumQualifications:
  • The job requires an associates’ degree in an appropriate mechanical specialty, such as automotive and diesel technology, and three or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
  • A valid commercial driver's license (CDL Class B) with an air brake endorsement is required
  • Appropriate DOT certification and ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification are required and/or other appropriate certification
  • Incumbent will also be required to furnish a complete set of hand tools needed to complete the essential duties of the position


Knowledge,skills and abilities include:
  • Knowledge of proper and safe procedures of hazardous materials handling including storage and disposal according to federal regulation
  • Knowledge of machine shop practices, welding, cutting, and other metal working techniques
  • Knowledge of concepts, principles and techniques relating to the operation, maintenance and repair of a wide range of automotive and diesel equipment
  • Knowledge of engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brake systems, HAVC, fuel injection, electrical, electronic and computer diagnostics
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • Skill in basic mathematical computations to make precise measurements and develop repair estimates
  • Skill in written English sufficient to read technical manuals and instructions and to record pertinent information concerning repairs
  • Skill in communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
  • Skill in operating general computer software programs and accessing onboard computers
  • Skill in the proper and safe operation, servicing and maintenance of material moving equipment
  • Knowledge of local and state laws and regulations regarding the operation of equipment
