Medical Laboratory Technician - (Med Lab Tech - MLT)
StartDate: 04/21/2014Available Shifts: 8 D Pay Rate: $31.00-36.00 *

Montana Licensed Med Tech or Med Lab Tech needed ASAP for a permanent position. Rural Northeastern Montana 25-bed Critical Access Hospital located next to Fort Peck Dam. Generalist position with Blood Banking and Microbiology experience required. -Hematology: Ruby Celldyn
-Chemistry: Ortho Vitros 5.1
-Immunochemistry: Ortho ECIQ
-Blood bank: Ortho Gel system
-Urinalysis: Siemens Status
-Coag: Siemens (DADE) Sysmex CA-500
-ESRs: Minives
-Microbiology: Dade-microscan (auto system) and Bactec for blood cultures
-Blood gases: Opticare (point of care analyzer) done by lab and drawn by lab
-Biosite triage meter used for cardiac enzymes, BNP and Ddimers
-LIS system is Meditech

All shifts are 8 hours with shifts starting from 6:30 to 9:00 in the morning and ending from 3:00 to 5:30 in the afternoon. After 5:30pm until 6:30am in the morning a tech is on call, with an average of one night a week. Weekend’s one person works from 6:30 to 10:30 and is on call the rest of the day. Work is only performed on inpatients and ER patients unless arranged previously by providers. Average weekend call is 2 days every 6 weekends. Holidays are worked the same schedule as the weekends and they are split by all techs and are rotated every year, about 1 holiday per year. Average of one to two callbacks a night but this can vary. Weekends may be a few more callbacks. Pay for call is $2.00/hour. Call back pay is time and a half with a guarantee of 1hour pay. Vacations are usually granted by first request, if more than one request past requests are reviewed of those requesting time off and then determined.

We do have a phlebotomist, but techs have to perform phlebotomy when phlebotomist is gone or on call or when working weekends or holidays. Techs also have to obtain arterial samples. At times nursing or providers will obtain samples for us. We also collect urine drug screens and breath alcohol for DOT and NonDOT testing and all are required to perform these.

There are usually 4 techs and a phlebotomist on every weekday, plus the lab manager.

Working under the supervision of a medical technologist, medical laboratory technicians perform routine tests in various areas of clinical laboratory testing, including:
  • Blood banking
  • Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology Medical laboratory technicians may also be responsible for preparing specimens and operating automated analyzers, or performing manual tests.
