This is a Senior Proposal Writer position on the Strategic Proposal Development team within New Business Services. This Writer is expected to produce powerfully written, tightly organized RFP responses and executive summaries that clearly define and strategically differentiate Optum's complex product solutions. This individual works within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment where multiple leaders influence and drive the RFP response and products evolve continuously. This individual is assigned to our largest, highest visibility, most complicated and typically highest revenue bids. He or she must research and interview multiple stakeholders to understand customer need and our proposed solution—then articulate our value story in compelling responses and executive summaries. This position also plays a critical thought leadership role on the New Business Services team by generating and promoting the adoption of new ideas, processes and approaches. This is a career opportunity that requires an individual with the capabilities and desire to move to the next level (“Strategist”) within 2-3 years.


-Own and articulate the value proposition, market positioning and overall strategic response by gathering necessary content to write a response that reflects strong awareness of customer and highlights Optum competitive differentiators in order to move the customer to buy

 

Contribute to new content across all major content categories and product lines by creating strategic responses

 

Work with an extensive database of content, answer RFP questionnaires and customize as appropriate to: a) answer the question directly and thoroughly b) reflect the proposed service solution c) persuade the customer that our products/solutions solve their specific problems

 

Interface regularly with leadership to ensure that New Business keeps pace with developments in the marketplace and corporate positioning

 

Contribute as member of New Business thought leadership to assist in development and implementation of process improvements and the writing model that will drive greater efficiency and increased win rates

 

Adhere to quality principles (responsive, accurate, concise, strategic), style guide, and other criteria for compelling and consistent messaging

 

Coach and mentor strategic proposal writer new hires in strategic proposal writing and NBS processes through collaboration and editing


 

Requirements

Exceptional strategic writing skills


A career track that emphasizes business-to-business writing roles—ideally with 7-10 years of proposal writing experience in an environment similar to UnitedHealth Group


 


Experience writing payer, government (state/fed), provider and commercial proposals


 


Experience working as part of a cohesive, collaborative team to discuss, define and articulate business solutions for Requests for Proposal (RFP)


 


An understanding of today's domestic health care environment, including key players, trends and drivers (such as the Affordable Care Act, value-based performance, etc.); knowledge of health care technology products is a plus


 


Flexibility and nimbleness to change direction unexpectedly, without losing focus, such as when a new product solution is proposed mid-stream


Ability to perform to high quality standards under pressure and to interact productively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels when faced with multiple, time-sensitive priorities


 


BA or BS degree in English, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field
