The VP, Specialty Pharmacy is an executive leadership role responsible for the development and execution of future focused strategy for Specialty. This role will assist in driving the overall strategic vision and will provide leadership to and be accountable for the performance and results of the Specialty business through multiple layers of management and senior level professional staff.

This new position was developed to assign ultimate responsibility for setting overall direction and strategy for Specialty, as well as providing clinical and product leadership to the Specialty business. This VP will develop and execute strategies across multiple markets and sites, review business performance against targets and institute required changes to improve competitive position and optimal performance. They will direct others to resolve business problems that affect multiple functions and work to influence internal and external business leaders to determine future direction for the business.

The VP, Specialty will manage multiple functions within the Specialty Pharmacy space, including but not limited to: product development, product management, client services & account management, clinical programs and pharmacy service. Product, service or process decisions are likely to impact multiple functions and/or customer accounts (internal or external). This individual will represent OptumRx in key presentations at regional and national events.

The position will require extensive interaction with UHG and Optum executive-level management, managers of local UHC plans and external customers. There will be responsibility for direct management of Specialty managers – Analytics, Project Management, Product Development, etc. The VP will also be the primary senior leader that interfaces with the UHG/UHC market with respect to Specialty. 

• 4 degree required, Advanced degree preferred


• Pharmacy degree/licensure highly preferred


• 10+ years of relevant business and clinical experience, to include some P&L responsibility required


• 5+ years at Director/Senior leadership level within PBM, hospital or managed care required


• 5+ years in a senior leadership role within clinical programs/Specialty business


• Experience implementing and monetizing specialty solutions required


• Ability to think expansively and create/develop vision and strategy of future specialty pharmacy programs


• M&A experience preferred


• Exceptional executive-level presentation/communication skills
