Positions in this function perform various duties related to the fulfillment of prescription orders. Interprets physicians' prescriptions and creates order, accesses, inputs, and retrieves prescription information from computer system, verifies whether order is reimbursable. Dispenses any or all of the following: unit doses, specialty pharmaceuticals and injectibles; may compound medications. Consults with customers, patients and/or physicians regarding use of medications and potential drug interactions. Consultations may be telephonic or in person. Reviews and approves/denies requests for prescription prior authorizations. Pharmacists must have a current license without restrictions and Pharmacy Technicians must have current state license or national certification without restrictions based on regulatory requirements of worksite.

Job Description:


 


Positions in this function perform various duties related to the fulfillment of prescription Prior Authorizations.




  • Assist the Prior Notifications Services Director with oversight of daily operations and technical personnel, with routine decisions that include staffing and workload assessments, scheduling, and recommendations for candidate selection.


  • Reviews and interprets physicians' requests for prior authorizations and creates cases as appropriate.


  • Accesses, inputs, and retrieves necessary prescription information from computer system.


  • Consults with customers (physicians, pharmacies) regarding status of prior authorization.


  • Provides work direction to team of pharmacy technicians


  • Pharmacy Technicians must have current state license or national certification without restrictions based on regulatory requirements of worksite.

Responsibilities:




  • Process prior authorization requests and accurately documents clinical information associated with the requests.


  • Research and resolve pharmacy claims/formulary/edit issues.


  • Communicate decisions directly to members and physicians; complete telephonic notification of decisions as required.


  • Document communication activities and provide required reports.


  • Troubleshooting issues as they arise from physicians, pharmacies, and members.


  • Identify system and process-related changes to improve prior authorization process.


  • Apply knowledge/skills to complex activities, including those that may vary from day to day.


  • Demonstrate a depth and breadth of knowledge/skills in own area and is often able to apply these outside of own function.


  • Often acts as a technical resource to others in own function.


  • Participate in the training of new and existing employees.


  • Routine assessment of employees for adherence to defined metrics.


  • Manages day to day work for team or Pharmacy Technicians.


  • Works with the Director and Lead Pharmacist to resolve operational issues.


  • Understands legal limitations of technicians when performing duties and refers situations requiring clinical judgment to a pharmacist.


  • Anticipates customer needs and proactively identifies solutions.


  • Solves complex problems on own; proactively identifies new solutions to problems.


  • Plans, prioritizes, organizes and completes work to meet established objectives.


  • Acts as a facilitator to resolve conflicts on team; seen as key team member on project teams spanning more than own function.

Requirements



  • High school education or equivalent experience.


  • Pharmacy Technicians must have current state license or national certification without restrictions based on regulatory requirements of worksite.


  • 2+ years of experience in a retail, hospital or managed care pharmacy environment.


  • 2+ years of experience leading a team.

Must have active, in good-standing pharmacy certification and registration in TX.
