Job Summary

The primary purpose of a Cashier is to create an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service. A Cashier is responsible for generating sales, providing fast, friendly and accurate check out services, housekeeping, and putting merchandise back to proper shelf locations. A Cashier also is responsible to bag their customers’ orders and help customers find items in the store.

Duties and responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

General

  • Observe all store rules and company policies;
  • Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service or assistance;
  • Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and observe the company dress code; must wear an approved hat;
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of products sold in the store and be able to respond to questions and make suggestions about products;
  • Maintain an awareness of all product knowledge information, merchandise promotions, weekly ad specials and memorize product identification codes;
  • Accurately and efficiently complete all sales transactions and maintain proper cash and media accountabilities at POS registers;
  • Carefully bag customers’ items, and as per their request;
  • Controlling and checking outgoing merchandise;
  • Maintain a clean and neat workstation;
  • Assist in processing and replenishing merchandise;
  • Answer customers’ questions and communicate any customer requests to Management;
  • Return products back to proper shelf locations;
  • Help customers find items in the store;
  • Observe shift operating hours at all times, as scheduled or assigned by store manager;
  • Adhere to all local, state and federal guidelines and laws;
  • Comply with safety policies and procedures;
  • Perform other duties and assignments as directed;

Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years of age. Have a commitment to service, excellence and customer service. Previous experience in retail environment preferred.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Be able to perform arithmetical calculations at the eighth-grade level in order to handle sales transactions, tender change, and reconciling media with total sales;

Language Skills:

  • Ability to hear, speak and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance, and to be able to communicate effectively with the store’s co-workers and customers;
  • Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to read and understand:
  1. Instructions for operating electronic equipment and tools,
  2. Company handbooks, policies and procedures, and
  3. Other written job related documents including postings on company bulletin boards.
  • Ability to fill out forms properly.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to be even-tempered, patient and understanding.

Physical requirements

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Some requirements may be modified to accommodate individuals with disabilities:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the Cashier is regularly on their feet, and use the hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools is required;
  • The employee must frequently walk, talk or hear, and reach with the hands and arms; occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel;
  • The employee must occasionally exert, pull or lift up to 50 pounds carrying bulk containers of food and supplies and frequently exert or lift negligible amounts of weight;
  • Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including possessing sufficient visual acuity to verify transactions and other written documents;
  • Be able to sweep and mop floors and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin;
  • Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests due to accidental spills or breakage of glass;
  • Be able to work with fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, spices, sauces, flour and other food products without negative allergic consequences that affect performance;
  • Be able to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and chemical fumes from common household cleaning agents such as ammonia during routine housekeeping duties.
