Job Summary

The State and Local Tax (SALT) Compliance Manager monitors states and localities within the United States to ensure UPS entities are in compliance with income, franchise, excise, gross receipts, and net worth taxes and tax reporting requirements.  This includes setting up
processes to gather necessary information, complete and document necessary filings; and document processes and positions to facilitate audits. 

The SALT Compliance Manager develops processes to ensure returns are prepared, reviewed, and filed with state and local governments.  He/She develops processes to ensure estimated tax payments are reviewed and remitted. This position provides estimates to External Reporting group on future tax liabilities to ensure accurate financial reporting of state tax attributes.

Other Duties

  • Modifies and develops processes to ensure information received meets requests, is audited for accuracy, and is reasonable.
  • Develops processes to ensure filings are properly documented and summarized.
  • Analyzes information (i.e., projected financial factors for determining tax liability) to provide a valid estimate and reduce penalties and interest.
  • Reviews methods of tax filing (e.g., unitary, combined groups, etc.) and models different tax liability scenarios to determine the most effective methods for reducing liability, saving money, and remaining compliant.
  • Identifies individual and team skill gaps and developmental opportunities (e.g., training, special assignments, conferences, projects, etc.) to facilitate individual and team development.

Preferred Competencies

  • Accounting Knowledge: Applies standard GAAP methods; makes recommendations to improve practices or procedures in compliance with GAAP.
  • Conducts Research: Identifies the business problem that requires research; identifies sources of information that are relevant to a problem; reviews literature and data related to the research question; summarizes information from data sources.
  • Designs/Develops Integrated Solutions to Business Problems: Demonstrates a broad understanding of business requirements or critical elements of a problem; identifies the impact of a problem on multiple areas of the business; recommends improvements to existing processes or programs.
  • Finance Knowledge: Accurately reads and interprets financial reports and statements; demonstrates an understanding of relevant financial measures, revenue and cost drivers; applies financial analysis to recommend solutions that support business objectives.
  • Risk Management: Identifies and evaluates risks; determines and applies appropriate risk treatment(s).
  • Small Package Operations Knowledge: Demonstrates a complex knowledge of small package operations; considers the impact of small package operations on other parts of the business; develops solutions to improve operations.

Minimum Qualifiers

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field– Preferred
