Positions in this function provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks and privileges of the organization. Protect the organization's rights in settlements and litigation. Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices of this particular business within UnitedHealth Group so as to best advise senior business leaders. Provides a full range of legal advice and services and may specialize in one of more areas such as subrogation, benefit law, insurance law, and litigation.

The Associate General Counsel in Subrogation and Litigation provides primary business and litigation support to Optum's thriving subrogation business and also manages litigation across Optum. Case mix will include payment integrity matters, commercial disputes, subpoena response and additional matters as required. The Associate General Counsel interfaces with business and litigation attorneys across the UnitedHealth Group enterprise. Litigation experience is essential, and previous subrogation, healthcare and ERISA experience is strongly preferred.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree


• Juris Doctorate degree, with excellent academic credentials


• 5+ years of legal experience, including at least 3 years of litigation experience


• Well-developed written and verbal communications skills


• Healthcare law experience, including Medicare, Medicaid, subrogation and ERISA, strongly preferred


• Working within or supporting large scale corporate organization, prior experience working with UHG is a plus


• Proven success in collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment


• Demonstrated understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects


• Sound decision-making ability in a fast paced environment


• Proven ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously


• Excellent presentation skills


• Excellent negotiation skills


• Ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business unit needs


• Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external companies
