Southwest Medical Associates (SMA) is a multi-specialty group of physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, consisting of over 200 providers, fourteen clinical locations including nine health care centers, five urgent care clinics and an outpatient surgery center. SMA offers patients compassion, innovation, and quality care throughout southern Nevada. SMA is headquartered in the greater Las Vegas, NV area.


 


The Surgical Technician position is responsible in assisting surgeons during all surgical procedures, preparing and handling of sterile instruments and supplies required for surgical procedures. Assists the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves. During surgical procedure this position provides instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies. Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings. Additionally this position provides assistance to GI and pain management services. This position is also responsible in handling and cleaning endoscopes in the GI department and furthermore this position helps in Sterile Processing Department (SPD) when required. After surgical, pain and GI procedure may help transfer patients to the recovery room, clean, and restock the operating room.


 


 Monday through Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, No weekends or on-call!


 


Primary Responsibilities:



  • Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to updated physician preference card

  • Performs specified functions to meet the requirements of each approved procedure

  • Follows and principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures and assists in compliance activities to maintain facility standards

  • Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure

  • Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays and assist in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure

  • Response in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patients and physician (example: use proper communication technique with materials, SPD and surgical reps in getting sterile instruments and supplies available for the procedure)

  • Responsible for procedures as assigned by RN Supervisor or RN Manager

  • Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians and coworkers and interacts with others in a positive, respectful and considerate manner

  • Per assignment, may be responsible for maintaining, cleaning, and troubleshooting GI scopes and assuring all supplies and equipment are in working order

  • Arranges instruments according to given procedure

  • Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and takes action according to policy

  • Correctly uses, cares for, cleans, and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment as directed

  • Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety

  • Assists in storing and stocking supplies as directed

  • Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeons preference cards

  • Documents patient-care records and other forms according to facility policies and procedure

Requirements

Required Qualifications:



  • Graduated from an approved Operating Room Technician program

  • Current Surgical Technician Certificate 

  • 1+ years of Operating Room/Surgical Tech experience outside of internship (prefer a varied background in general surgery, ortho, gyn etc.) 

  • BLS/CPR 

  • Experience with biological testing and ability to properly care of surgical and GI instruments

Preferred Qualifications: 



  • Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) experience 

  • GI and Orthopedics experience
