As an IT professional you have expert knowledge in one or more programming languages or databases. Because of your excellent understanding of the entire project life cycle, you have the ability to direct project teams in the gathering, design, and development of complex applications/programs. You get to work closely with and learn from the brightest minds to ensure proper system design. Your role ensures highest quality implementations from design through quality insurance to production. You anticipate hardware and software design needs to take pre-emptive action. Our IT professionals support multiple team members and other project leads in day-to-day activities related to project work.
The Lead Systems Engineer develops, maintains and supports The Home Depot's complex technical infrastructures, hardware, and system software components. Operates as a team lead providing expert technical direction to team members. Interface with Business Stakeholders on all complex projects. Ability to present ideas and take charge of projects. Update manager on all escalated issues.
This is a ground floor opportunity to be an engineer to help plan, deploy, and evolve a large and diverse implementation of operational analytics at The Home Depot. Our implementation of operational analytics provides a business and service-oriented context to operational information. For instance, rather than an alert on a full filesystem, provide an alert on increased response times affecting stores' ability to place customer orders. Operational analytics uses a continual service improvement process model that emphasizes incremental implementation with defined success criteria. Continual service improvement encourages examination of results, lessons learned and unimplemented functionality to grow standard service offerings.

In this role, you're comfortable working with a team, have years of networks, systems, applications, and service monitoring experience, and know what it's like to take operate at the enterprise level. We need your help to:

* Work with customers and other stakeholders to identify needs and requirements.
* Analyze existing operations to determine current state.
* Determine desired future state. E.g. additional monitoring, analytics, dashboards, etc.
* Perform gap analysis between current and future state. Study system capabilities; analyze alternative solutions.
* Develop a plan to fill the gaps from gap analysis.
* Identify success criteria for the plan to fill gaps.
* Provide project estimates for the plan by identifying phases and elements, personnel requirements, test requirements, and costs.
* Design and develop scripts or code, as needed.
* Verify success by completing activities to identify whether or not success criteria are met.
* Conduct training, as needed, to prepare customer to use solution.
* Contribute to documentation on how to maintain systems used to provide solutions.
* Document and implement lessons learned.
* Maintain quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
* Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES -
  • Manage installation, maintenance and support of complex technical infrastructures, hardware, and system software components.
  • Manage and tune platforms to ensure expected availability and performance levels are achieved.
  • Provide expert technical direction to Sr. System, System, Associate Engineers and contractors.
  • Manage store & SSC engineering and roll-out implementation.
  • Perform root cause analysis for service interruption recovery; create preventative measures on complex projects.
  • Interface with Business Stakeholders on all applicable projects. Update manager on all escalated issues. NATURE AND SCOPE -
    Typically reports to Manager, Information Technology No associates report to this role on a permanent basis, but requires the leadership of a work group: assign and review work, train and contribute to performance appraisal (but not hiring, firing or disciplinary action). ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS -
    Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS -
Must be eighteen years of age or older. Must pass the Drug Test. Must successfully complete any required training or orientation courses.

EDUCATION REQUIRED -
The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a high school diplomas and/or GED.

YEARS OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE - 5

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS -
Frequent periods are spent standing or sitting in the same location with some opportunity to move about; occasionally there may be a need to stoop or lift light objects (typically less than 8 pounds).

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS -
Expert Knowledge and experience with computer hardware, operating systems and system software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS -
* 5+ years of experience monitoring networks, systems, applications, and services
* 5+ years' experience of working in team environments and teaching others what you know
* 3+ years of experience maintaining and supporting Unix/Linux based systems with a solid understanding of Unix or Linux based servers
* 3+ years of experience with enterprise monitoring systems (e.g. IBM Netcool OMNIbus or similar)
* 5+ years' experience with one or more scripting, or similar, languages (Python, Perl, JavaScript, Powershell, Go)
* Demonstrable experience monitoring and managing systems using two or more of the following technologies: SNMP, web services, Splunk, collectd, Microsoft SCOM, Business Availability Center
* Experience with graphite, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana a plus.
* Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and tools
* Participate in the building of tools and processes to support the infrastructure
* Comfort with frequent, incremental code testing and deployment
* Data management skills
* Learn on the job and explore new technologies with little supervision
* A Strong focus on business outcomes
* Contribute to the creation of system support documents such as run books
* Comfortable with collaboration, open communication and reaching across functional borders
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES -
  • Expert knowledge of the PC (hardware and software) is essential.
