The Staff Nurse provides safe and effective nursing care in the assigned area(s) in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of the Hospital and within the framework of established policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing Services. As a key team member in the clinical area, the Staff Nurse promotes a climate of effective performance and learning through role modeling, willingness to learn and teach, and availability to patients and staff.

Duties include but not limited to:

1. Completes an assessment for each patient on admission, and as needed, based upon patient's condition, various status, needs and discharge criteria.

2. Utilizes appropriate observation level for patient: q15 minute checks, visual observation

3. Organizes and directs care of patients, setting priorities and assigning most skilled staff to care for most acutely ill patients.

4. Intervenes in managing complex patient care situations utilizing departmental policies and procedures that promote most facilitative alternatives. Prioritizes interventions in rapidly changing patient situations. Assesses patient's response to interventions communicates these findings to other team members.

5. Sets priorities appropriately utilizing nursing process and data from Nursing Assessment. Adapts procedures to individual patient needs while maintaining the integrity of the principles involved.

6. Documents education about medications, disease symptom identification, social skills, stress management, and impulse control regulation.

7. Is available for 1:1 interactions with patients as needed and shares in providing intervention and/or management of inappropriate behavior.

8. Anticipates emergent situations and intervenes early and appropriately.

9. Demonstrates effective management of assaultive behavior and appropriate use of seclusion and/or restraints.

10. Observes signs and symptoms presented by patients and acts appropriately, effectively and in a timely fashion.

11. Completes charting on all assigned patients, in progress notes and all pertinent graphics.

12. Establishes and maintains a therapeutic alliance with patients by assisting the patient to use the therapeutic milieu.Respects patient confidentiality in and outside of group setting and uses discretion when discussing patient information.

13. Transcribes and administers medications and treatments accurately. Documents correctly and legible on medication record. Practices the "7 Rights" of medication administration.

14. Monitors patient for adverse drug reactions and reports any adverse drug reactions immediately to physician or pharmacist. Knows side effects, normal dosage and contradictions of all medications given.

15. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and adherence to Hospital policies and procedures and assists with interpreting Hospital policies.

16. Staff Nurse functions as acting Charge Nurse when assigned. Supervises in a fair manner and provides direction as needed.

17. Participates in hospital-wide and unit specific performance improvement activities.

Education:

. Graduate of accredited School of Nursing required.

Credentials:

. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse through the State of California Board of Registered Nursing required.

Experience:

. Clinical experience in a psychiatric setting preferred.

Minimum requirements:

. Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training, and annually thereafter.

. Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation upon hire and bi-annually thereafter.

. Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray tri-annually thereafter.

. Must be certified in Handle With Care Behavior Management Systemreg training within the first three (3) months of hire and annually thereafter.

. Must meet Service Excellence Standards.

. Must complete all required mandatory educational training upon hire and annually thereafter.

Knowledge/Skills:

. Must have ability to communicate effectively.

. Must be able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations

. Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions

. Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles

. Must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures

. Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion

. Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads an work assignments on a constant basis

. Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal

. Must have math skills to enable calculation of drug dosages

Must possess a valid California Drivers License in order to transport patients and/or staff, or drive hospital vehicles.
