About this job
Receives patients, checks test requisitions, maintains laboratory records, and performs data entry on the laboratory management system and receives/ distributes lab specimens.
Essential Functions:
* Uphold KP's policies & procedures, principles of responsibilities & applicable state, federal & local laws.
* Receive laboratory patients & check test requisitions to ensure completeness & accuracy.
* Obtain clearance for non-paying coverages following standard procedures.
* Make appropriate labels for tubes to be used in drawing blood.
* Give instructions to patients & provide necessary items such as urine containers, assist staff w/ difficult to manage patients.
* Guide, direct, & take patients to proper area.
* Verify members' co-pay amounts.
* Collect payments, at beginning of shift & end of shift, balance & sign for cash drawer (money on hand), provide members w/ receipts of co-pays, deposit balanced cash drawers at end of shift per cash handling policy.
* Receive telephone calls & provide information regarding laboratory operations.
* Make patient appointments according to prescribed procedures for special tests.
* Maintain departmental records to include daily census counts, completed laboratory procedures & record of specimens sent to outside laboratories.
* Separate laboratory requisition copies & routes to doctor, chart room, billing office of other location following standard procedures.
* Transcribe laboratory reports on laboratory slips, posts reports on inpatient charts as required, following standard procedures.
* Assist laboratory technologist w/ routine tests including pouring, numbering, centrifuging, & routine culturing.
* Receive courier baskets & distribute laboratory samples as requested.
* Fill courier baskets for outlying clinics w/ laboratory supplies for delivery.
* Assist in specimen tracking.
* Receive laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, stool, tissue, semen, spinal fluid, sputum, & other body fluids including GYN & non-GYN cytology & cultures from different sources.
* Give laboratory results to physicians, chart room & others as appropriate.
* Enter physician comments in computer as needed.
* Pick up & transport specimens for testing from other laboratory locations.
* Establish & maintain courteous, cooperative relations w/ the public, patients, & other personnel.
* Perform data entry & queries on a computer terminal for the Laboratory Management System (LMS), KP Data System (KPDS), & computerized appointment system (OPAS).
* Perform related duties as required, including cleaning & stocking cards, inventorying & requesting lab & pathology supplies under prescribed procedures, storing supplies, mail slips to proper area & other duties as assigned.
* Promote, ensure, & improve customer service to internal/ external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent w/ the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations & quality service.
* Assume other activities & responsibilities from time to time as directed.
Basic Qualifications:
* Bilingual (English/Spanish) Level I required.
* One (1) year of experience as a medical assistant OR six (6) months of experience working in a hospital or outpatient lab required.
* Typing 25 wpm. Typing score must be current within one (1) year. Please contact Human Resources for testing.
* Testing must be completed by the end of the posting period.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Ability to communicate in the English language.
* Demonstrate ability to maintain a positive working relationship and courteous interactions with the public.
Notes:
* Must successfully pass or have passed the bilingual test (within the last 12 months), or be active in the QBS program.
* Schedule to include all shifts, rotating weekends, holidays, and floating within the established seniority section - servicing Coachella Valley.
* Rotating Weekends.
