We have a full-time/part-time opening for a Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee.

Must be able to work various shifts per week.

Requirements



Controls water treatment plant processes and equipment per established procedures to purify/clarify water for human consumption and industrial/commercial use and to ensure a continuous, adequate supply of potable drinking water meeting federal/state regulations. Monitors wastewater treatment plant processes and equipment operations per established procedures to ensure proper treatment of wastewater per federal/state regulations.

Collects water or wastewater samples for analysis; collects bacteriological samples from designated areas; collects ICR samples; performs in-house testing of samples; calibrates test equipment; records instrument readings and test results. Performs a variety of quality control tests to determine the composition of water and to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations; performs jar tests to ensure water quality, makes adjustment as necessary. Performs analysis on bulk chemicals received at the plant; monitors chemical feeds for proper levels; adjusts feed rates as appropriate. Monitors operation of raw sewage pumps and grit removal equipment; monitors primary/secondary scum and sludge pumps; checks sludge depth; monitors pumping of sludge to digester.

Performs inspections of aeration basins; maintains proper dissolved oxygen and food/microorganism ratio; tests concentration of solids; tests concentration of sludge returned to the system for further treatment; makes adjustments.

Maintains water tank levels; cleans/disinfects water storage tanks; maintains proper water levels in filters; backwashes filters; monitors, operates and calibrates various pumps used to regulate water flow, pressure, and tank levels. Monitors and inspects plant equipment and operations for safety, maintenance and proper process operations; performs repairs as needed to maintain equipment; refers to appropriate maintenance personnel. Takes readings from assorted meters/gauges; reads, interprets and records a variety of data; tests and calibrates diagnostic instrumentation as needed. Performs cleaning, repair, and maintenance tasks to keep plant, machinery, equipment, tools and grounds in good condition.

Operates various machinery, equipment and tools in performance of assigned duties which may include meters, gauges, pumps, chemical feeders, autoclave, calibrator, dump truck, tractor, drill press, welder, shovel, mower, mechanic tools, air compressors, motors, generators, blowers, valves, and diagnostic instruments.

Operates a computer for use in monitoring plant operations, maintaining tank levels, and conducting other work activities. Prepares and/or completes various forms, reports, logs, charts, or other documents; forwards or maintains as appropriate. Reports include data to and from ADEM, the EPA, the U.S. Geological department, as well as many other agencies. Receives various reports, forms, and correspondence; reviews, processes or forwards as appropriate; maintains documentation for reference; prepares and/or completes various forms, reports, logs, charts, or other documents; forwards or maintains as appropriate. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service. Responds to calls from the public concerning water system problems, complaints, or emergency situations; dispatches service requests as necessary. Serves as after hours point of contact for all Water and Sewer Department problems and reports all problems to appropriate personnel. Maintains monthly chemical inventory; reviews purchasing costs and orders chemicals as needed; disposes of outdated chemicals.Tests generators weekly to ensure a standby power source to facility. Coordinates with the Fire and Police Departments where waterworks are involved.
