Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining.

An employee who is a journeyman and without direct supervision is engaged in the technology associated with the installation, adjusting, testing, operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic gas measurement, instrumentation and control systems and all other equipment appurtenant to the operation of gas facilities. Employee must be able to work at elevated heights. Employee may be required to act in a lead capacity, supervising the work of other employees in lower classifications engaged in this work. Employee's background of apprenticeship and experience shall be such that these duties are performed with skill and efficiency.

This is a DOT covered classification and subject to random drug screening.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Must be at least 18 years of age

* Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience

* Must possess a valid California Driver's License

* Internal PG&E Employees (w/in the Line of Progression): Must have qualified on the Physical Test Battery (PTB) and Industrial Skills Test (IST) prior to interview

* Internal PG&E Employees (outside of the Line of Progression), External, and Hiring Hall Candidates: Must have qualified on the Physical Test Battery (PTB), Industrial Skills Test (IST), Work Orientation Inventory (WOI), and Gas Control Technician (GCT) tests prior to interview

* Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds a minimum of one time a day

Desired Qualifications:

* 5 or more years of instrumentation work experience desirable

* 3 years knowledge of electronics, measurement and control experience, and equipment instrumentation/troubleshooting experience

* Experience with maintenance of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)/LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) facilities a plus

* Completion of formal instrumentation education program

* Basic computer skills including use of MS Windows operating system, MS office suite

* Knowledge and working experience with gas regulation, measurement, and basic data communication techniques is desirable. * Basic math understanding and use including applied knowledge of Ohm's Law.

* Knowledge and working experience with electrical power systems and equipment.

Responsibilities

* Installs/maintains/repairs mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic gas measurement, instrumentation and control systems and other equipment associated with the operation of gas facilities. Examines, replaces, and/or repairs switches, lights, circuit breakers, panel boxes, transformers, relays, and controls. Overhauls and repairs heat exchangers, compressors, motors, and fans; repairs electro-mechanical gear-operated equipment.

* Conducts visual, auditory, and mechanical inspections of equipment to determine the extent of repairs needed and to identify needed replacement parts. Tests hydraulic pressures and electronic and mechanical components. Uses computerized testing equipment to test or calibrate electronic components and to check failure codes. Inspects and adjusts components on equipment to prevent premature failure of items.

* Surveys pipeline for leaks using a calibrated gas detector-sensing device (flame pack) by walking the pipeline. Services, operates, maintains, and secures valves and valve sites by visual inspection, facility maintenance (housekeeping), signage, and painting. Marks and locates pipelines and underground equipment for Underground Service Alert (USA) purposes by using a utility line locator. Measures pipeline and soil potential differentials using voltmeter and checks rectifier output.

* Drives mid-size and heavy-duty trucks, specialized equipment (i.e., all-terrain vehicle), and cars to job sites, which may be located in remote areas or in rugged terrain.

* Employee may be required to work as an assistant to a Gas Transmission Technician to gain experience in the installation, adjusting, testing, operation, maintenance and repair of telecommunication equipment.

* May be required to perform all the duties of a Measurement and Control Mechanic.

* May be able to install telephone instruments if trained and qualified.

* May be required to write and hold pipeline and station clearances.

* Based on operational needs may be required to operate, maintain and troubleshoot CNG and LNG injection equipment.

* Contribute toward Gas Safety Excellence goals by improving safety, reliability and affordability for one or more asset families and one or more life cycles.
