The Deli department is where customers can find a wide variety of meats and cheeses to help make a delicious sandwich, get ideas for easy entertaining options or countless other meal solutions and suggestions. As a Team Leader in this area, you will assist in running the Deli department and will work with team members to develop their skills and passions. I will add value by:
  • Performing tasks essential to the proper functioning of the department including ordering with Simplification practices in mind, hiring & staffing, training & development, scheduling and managing payroll
  • Leading employees by example to provide incredible customer service by proactively approaching customers at the counter; slicing, weighing and packaging a variety of items as requested; answering any questions about products and services offered
  • Delegating tasks to team members and empowering them to take on new challenges, being certain to provide timely feedback and annual performance reviews that focus on their growth and professional development
  • Using passion, knowledge and hands-on experience with products to educate both team members and customers, ensuring they have the tools needed to make, or help make, great meals easy
  • Following Wegmans core recipes while preparing items in the department and for use in the Prepared Food to ensure a consistent outcome, overseeing team members and correcting any errors
  • Maintaining the overall appearance of the department, ensuring product levels are sustained throughout the day and displays are properly signed and well-merchandised consistent with company standards while reflecting seasonal trends and showcasing quality
  • Maintaining open lines of communication with team members and Deli Manager to ensure smooth department operations
  • Educating and ensuring team members are properly handling products, using equipment and keeping accurate logs in accordance with food safety and safety guidelines



Qualifications

  • Customer service experience, preferably in a food service, grocery or retail setting

  • Practice proper planning and staffing techniques which include managing time and resources

  • Use data analysis, wisdom, experience, judgment, and past actions as well as input from other sources for decision making, always considering the impact on customers, sales and contribution (profit)
  • Control inventory levels and expenses such as payroll and shrink to impact bottom-line contribution (profit) for the department
  • Ability to multi-task and react to a variety of situations at one time
  • Practice proper ordering techniques to complete orders by deadlines and participate in inventory process to ensure items are available to support merchandising programs and product promotions
  • Exhibit merchandising skills by attractively displaying products considering seasonality, cross-merchandising opportunities and corporate programs with the aim of educating and enticing customers
  • Assist with meal preparation and planning by providing customers with proper serving guidelines and recommending correct cooking techniques, helping to make great meals easy

What will set me apart from other candidates:
  • Managerial/ supervisory experience
  • Experience working in a deli/ specialty deli and/ or using a deli slicer
  • Knowledge of food and beverage pairings particularly with deli meats, cheeses and other products featured in the department

Work environment:
  • Work involves continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • Typical motions include repetitive hand and arm movements, repetitive grasping, bending and reaching
  • Responsible for moving or lifting an average of 5 – 20 pounds with a maximum weight lifted of 35 pounds occasionally
  • May be exposed to various allergens and work environments, including cold temperatures
  • Work requires the safe and proper handling of slicers, knives and other kitchen utensils and equipment
  • Will be required to spend the majority of time on his or her feet and stand or walk without a break for up to 4 hours

Age Requirement: Must be 18 years or older.

Days/Hours Requirement: Full time applicants are required to have an open availability Monday-Saturday between the operating hours of 6am-Midnight and are typically scheduled a minimum of 40 hours a week. (unless Overnights then operating hours of 6pm to 8am)
