The Utilization Review Specialist provides utilization review services in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of the facility. The Utilization Review Specialist evaluates patient medical records to determine severity of patients illness and determines the appropriate level of care. Serves as liaison for patients and hospital with insurance companies. Negotiates and advocates for patient length of stay and level of care. Oversees utilization review activities with other departments to ensure reimbursement for services provided by the hospital.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position. Staff must demonstrate flexibility for reassignment, providing care to varied populations including male and female children, adolescents and adults as well as dually diagnosed adults.
Education: Associates degree in Nursing or Human Services field or Master's degree in Counseling or Social Work preferred
Experience: Minimum of 2 years clinical experience and 1 year of experience with case management and the utilization process including concurrent reviews. Previous continuum of care experience highly preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Valid LPN or RN license required for all nurse candidate
Knowledge: Prefer knowledge of case management, discharge planning, age specific growth and development, crisis and behavior management.
