GENERAL SUMMARY:

Collaborates with all customers (internal/external) in an effort to meet the needs of person(s) seeking Behavioral Health Services. Completes initial clinical assessments to determine the appropriate level of behavioral health care.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Conforms to the established Standards of Behavior

Facilitates the admission process to BHS units and programs, assures for accurate registration, completes insurance verification, pre-certification and financial counseling.

3. Evaluates the environmental safety and provides an environment that is safe based on the age and developmental status for both pediatric and adult populations served to maintain compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. Facilitates patient/family participation in self care based on the age and developmental status for both pediatric and adult populations.

4. Demonstrates appropriate psychosocial interventions based on the age and developmental status.

5. Performs crisis intervention triage functions for BHS patients presenting to the emergency department.

6. Completes behavioral health initial clinical assessments, such as level of care and suicide/homicide risk assessments for emergency department and medical floor patients that are referred for inpatient psychiatric services

7. Facilitates referrals to the appropriate level of care based on clinical findings and taking into consideration the cultural, ethnic, demographic financial and socio- economic needs of patient(s) and their families.

8. Documents clinical findings in accordance with established hospital policies and protocols.

9. Provides referral information to Emergency Department clients who present with suspected child/elder abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence as well as self care and housing needs.

10. Completes initial inquiry calls and follow-ups in accordance with BHS standards and policies.

11. Facilitates entry of patients and families into the BHS programs. Informs them of pertinent information related to expected services (clinical and financial).

12. Obtains accurate pre-admission information, demographic and financial information. Completes the necessary benefit verification and pre-certification procedures ensuring that the documentation is accurate and comprehensive.

13. Demonstrates strong knowledge of BHS Managed Care contracts and the important components including billing, benefits and all Utilization Review/Utilization Management requirements and systems.

14. Clearly communicates the patients' clinical/financial needs to program staff as well as the physician staff to ensure for the appropriate follow-up.

15. Communicates clearly and in a timely manner with referral sources to keep them informed of their clients' status as well as to identify further needs.

16. Develops effective, positive relationships with all customers (internal/external) to ensure future referrals to the hospital and BHS. Maintains current working knowledge of established and emerging referral relationships.

17. Maintains a positive attitude and demonstrates initiative and interest in the growth of BHS Patient Services. Makes recommendations for change and assists in the implementation.

18. Maintains an environment that promotes the respect, dignity and the safety of BHS clients and employees.

19. Maintains awareness of and assures that the processing of patients is in accordance with Illinois Mental Health Code and Confidentiality Acts.

20. Provides back up coverage to BHS UR/UM case manager as needed.

21. Develops, implements and maintains current BHS UR/UM policies and procedures that are in compliance with all legal governing bodies and reflects the BHS philosophy of patient care.

22. Develops, implements and completes tracking forms/logs to determine utilization in all BHS programs by payors and physicians.

Maintains utilization statistics, reports any changes in data that may impact negatively on patient care practices or hospital reimbursement.

Establishes systems and tracking mechanisms that facilitate early identification of utilization trends. Develops standards of practice for UR/UM procedures.

Assists in the implementation and monitoring of set policies to assure Managed Care, Joint Commission, and other legal guidelines requirements are met or exceeded.

26. Assists in the development of forms and policies that streamline intake information to enable UM Case Managers and Social Workers to work effectively and efficiently on a day-to-day basis.

27. Problem solves as needed with the appropriate treatment team members to assure patients are transitioned appropriately and efficiently to the least restrictive level of care.

28. Serves as resource/consultation to emergency department and medical floor staff in explaining and helping to manage patients' symptoms and treatment needs effectively.

29. Reports potential quality of care issues including observed changes in data trends to the Director of Social Services.

30. Complies with skills, competencies and educational requirements related to the job and the department.

31. Remains informed of developments in area of expertise including but not limited to attending seminars and workshops and reading pertinent literature.

32. Other duties as assigned

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

1. Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) highly desirable.

2. Three (3) years of previous experience in a Behavioral Health setting required. Experience with Behavioral Health Intake/Admissions highly preferred.

3. Minimum of one (1) year of previous experience in completing Behavioral Health level of care assessments for adolescents and adults required.

4. Minimum of two (2) years of progressive Utilization Review/Management experience in a Behavioral Health setting.

5. Level of knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a Masters Degree in Social Work or other related Behavioral Science.

6. Current CPR Certification required.

7. Interpersonal skills necessary to maintain a professional demeanor in emotionally challenging and stressful situations that may include physically volatile occurrences.

8. Analytical skills required to prioritize and intervene in an environment that has a rapidly fluctuating work volume.

9. Marketing and business skills that enhance ability to work external contractors and customers.

10. Empathic approach to providing crisis intervention with an ability to establish appropriate limits while providing quality care.

11. Above average written and verbal communications skills needed to ensure for comprehensive and accurate documentation.
