The ER Clerk is responsible for the coordination of patient flow and accurate registrations on all patients on date of service. Ensures patient wait times do not exceed 10 minutes. The ER Clerk will provide clerical support to ER department staff by answering telephones, processing patient records, as well as meeting and greeting patients, visitors, staff, and physicians. Promptly respond to all inquiries and convey a professional, caring attitude and willingness to solve problems, answer questions and relay information. Rapidly retrieve data and other reports as needed. The ER Clerk will ensure that all paperwork is dispersed to the appropriate department. Answers all incoming calls. Covers other staff positions as needed. The ER Clerk maintains good public relations with hospital personnel, physicians and their staff, insurance companies, and patients. Ensures that services are authorized by calling insurance companies at time of service. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Education:

A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) is required.

Experience:

Previous Admission or related field experience is preferred.

Skills:

The position requires good customer service skills. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively and demonstrate service excellence through appropriate response and use of constructive problem solving techniques when confronted with different people or situations; use of effective communication skills which foster positive outcomes. Able to maintain a high awareness of patient satisfaction and team work. Able to pay attention to detail and work in a stressful environment. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and varied shifts as needed for appropriate departmental coverage. The candidate must be willing to work with minimal supervision. Requirements will include successful completion of orientation checklist and skills/credentials/competency requirements of specific unit. Must be able to function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and be able to work effectively with resident physicians, hospital personnel, and support agencies.

Typical Physical Demands:

The position requires full range of motion including handling and lifting of boxes and/or equipment, manual and finger dexterity and eye hand coordination. Must be able to stand, walk, squat or bend and move about freely a considerable amount of time and be able to routinely lift and or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. The position requires the ability to work under stressful conditions and/or irregular hours.
