The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to: Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for women and children based on established clinical nursing practice standards. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. Serves in the Resource Nurse role when oriented and as directed. Supports the organization's vision, mission and values. Utilizes knowledge of patient's age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.

1:1 Determines the priority of data collection based on the patient's immediate condition or needs. 1:2 Collects pertinent data using appropriate assessment techniques based on the patient's and significant others developmental levels, health status, and identified learning needs. 1:3 Involves the patient, significant others and health care providers in data collection when appropriate. 1:4 Ensures that the data collection process is systematic and ongoing. 1:5 Expands the system physical assessment when necessary. 1:6 Documents relevant data in the medical record according to hospital standards. 1:7 Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by policy and procedure. II. 2:1 Derives diagnosis/patient problems from the assessment data as evidenced by standards of care. 2:2 Validates diagnosis/patient problems with the patient, significant others and health care providers, when possible. 2:3 Documents diagnosis/patient problems in a manner that facilitates the determination of expected outcomes and plan of care. 2:4 Recognizes abnormalities in lab values and intervenes as appropriate. 2:5 Recognizes Fetal heart rate changes and intervenes appropriately. 2:6 Recognizes impending patient crisis and responds accordingly. III. 3:1 Derives outcomes from the diagnoses/patient problems. 3:2 Documents outcomes as measurable goals. 3:3 Ensures outcomes are realistic in relation to the patient's present and potential capabilities. 3:4 Ensures outcomes provide direction for continuity of care. IV. 4:1 Individualizes the plan to the patient's condition or needs. 4:2 Develops the plan with the patient, significant others, and health care providers, when appropriate. 4:3 Ensures the plan reflects current nursing standards, policies and procedures. 4:4 Documents on the plan and reviews on a daily basis. 4:5 Includes interventions to meet the patient's and significant other's identified learning needs. V. 5:1 Establishes interventions that are consistent with the plan of care. 5:2 Responds appropriately to signs and symptoms of fetal distress and other complications of the labor process 5.3 Prepares patient for emergency Caesarean section in a timely manner. 5:4 Communicates findings to physician in a timely manner. 5:5 Updates plan of care on a daily basis. 5:6 Communicates the plan of care to other members of the health care team by keeping the worksheets and clinical pathways updated. VI. 6:1 Ensures evaluation is systematic and ongoing as evidenced by documentation on clinical pathway. 6:2 Documents patient's responses to interventions, including pain reassessment. 6:3 Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions in relation to outcomes. 6:4 Utilizes ongoing assessment data to revise diagnosis/patient problems, outcomes and the plan of care. 6:5 Documents revisions in diagnoses/patient problems, outcomes and the plan of care. 6:6 Involves the patient, significant others and health care providers in the evaluation process, when appropriate. VII. 7:1 Performs activities related to internal and external Fetal Monitoring including accurately interpreting FM patterns 7:2 Applies various troubleshooting techniques to maintain accuracy and safe use of equipment. VIII. 8:1 Participates in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge and professional issues through CEU's, conferences and magazine articles. 8:2 Completes all Mandatory Annual Training. 8:3 Attends Skills lab for annual competency verification. 8:4 Maintains CPR and ACLS certification. 8:5 Maintains NRP and PALS certification. 8:6 Seeks knowledge and skills appropriate to the practice setting and related to the designated age specific population(s) served. IX. 9:1 Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others through preceptorship, patient care conferences or education boards. 9:2 Provides peers with constructive feedback regarding their practice. X. 10:1 Maintains patient confidentiality. 10:2 Assumes the role of patient advocate. 10:3 Delivers care in a nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory manner that is sensitive to diversity. 10:4 Seeks available resources to help formulate ethical decisions. XI. 11:1 Assigns tasks or delegates care based on the needs of the patient and the knowledge and skill of the provider selected. 11:2 Evaluates patient daily for fall risk and provides appropriate interventions per hospital policy. 11:3 Adheres to safety and infection control plan per hospital policy. 11:4 Verifies and directs implementation of physician orders with less than three incidents yearly. 11:5 Adheres to Five Rights of Medication administration with less than 3 med/transcription errors in a year. 11:6 Uses and maintains departmental equipment according to department and hospital policies. 11:7 Carefully and conscientiously applies pt. Charges. XII. 12:1 Neonate (less than 28 days)/infant (28 days to 18 months) Assists parents/guardian to identify and meet infant needs Involves parents in procedure(s), if possible Explains procedure(s) to parents/guardian prior to initiation Uses accessories/equipment appropriate for infant's size and mobility Does not leave infant unattended Permits infant to be held, if possible Always places infant back in isolette/crib and ensures safety rails are in place or places infant in a safe environment. 12:2 Toddler (1 to 3 years) *Explains actions prior to initiating *Demonstrates equipment prior to utilization *Involves parent(s)/guardian in procedure and education of procedure *Uses appropriate distraction techniques. *Gives child one directive at a time. *Speaks at eye level with child; maintains eye contact. *Speaks in a clam, clear, slow voice in language that the child may understand. *Provides for a safe environment by removing any unnecessary equipment; does not leave child unattended. *Utilizes equipment specific to age and size of child. *Encourages use of comfort objects such as blankets and stuffed toys. *Tells the child when the assessment/procedure is completed. *Provides opportunities for social activity/play. 12.3 Pre-school age child (3 --6 years) * Permits parents/guardian to remain close to the child. * Explains procedures to parents/guardians prior to initiating. * Permits the child to handle the equipment. Uses demonstration techniques as appropriate. * Explains procedures to child in language that the child may understand. * Exposes the child minimally. * Utilizes games to gain cooperation. * Utilizes equipment specific to age and size of child. * Provides opportunities for social activity/play. 12.4 School Age child ( 6-12 years) * Educates parent/guardian to remain close to the child. * Explains procedures to patient using correct terminology. * Permits questions and answers prior to examination. * Permits child to exercise some control. * Gives the child the choice as to whether the parent/guardian is present, if appropriate for the situation. * Provides for privacy/modesty when possible. * Provides for safe environment by removing unnecessary equipment. * Utilizes equipment specific to size and mobility of child. 12:4 Adult (18-65 years): Provides education regarding procedures to patient and/or significant other. Explains information using correct understandable terminology Explains equipment that is utilized Addresses the patient using their last name, unless told otherwise by the patient. Involves the patient in procedure and planning Explains time sequencing and individual variances Maintains privacy Remains in sight of patient whenever possible. 12.5 Adolescent (12 to 18 years) * Explains procedures using correct terminology. * Gives the patient the choice as to whether the parent/guardian is present, if appropriate for the situation. * Includes parents/guardians in education. * Explains the purpose of equipment and assessment/procedures. * Involves the patient in decision making and planning. * Alleviates any fears by addressing all questions. * Maintains privacy. * Plans for a safe/comfortable environment. 12:6 Geriatric (> 65 years): Provides education regarding procedure(s). Addresses the patient using their last name Speaks distinctly and does not raise voice unless patient is hard of hearing Provides adequate lighting Slows down pace if necessary Ensures patient warmth due to decrease heat regulation Permits patient to dictate mobility Maintains privacy Interacts frequently with patient. Demonstrates skill in use of equipment relevant to position, knowledge of appropriate safety procedures. 22.1 Diagnosis equipment problems, repairs or seeks out someone to repair. 22.2 Consistently inform appropriate person of problems encounter with repairs or calibration of equipment Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. Proficient oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will be required to pass competencies for this position within 90 days and yearly. CPR is required by all RN's. RN's caring for the labor patient must have NRP and ACLS training and be skilled in the interpretation of fetal heart rate monitoring. Pediatric RN's must have NRP and PAL's training. Training/Experience: Acquired advanced knowledge of physiological, psychosocial and therapeutic components specific to the care of the Obstetrical, Gynecologic, Pediatric and Neonatal patients. Ability to practice nursing as described by the following definition: "The diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health alterations." Ability to utilize the nursing process in the provision of nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications, interpreting contraction patterns and fetal heart rate patterns, diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other health care providers and providing education to patients and/or significant others. Demonstrates knowledge base pre-requisite to the care of neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patients as evidenced by successful completion of orientation.
