DESCRIPTION:

The incumbent in this position performs school health nursing work for the Comprehensive School Health Services Program in an area geographically removed from direct supervision. The incumbent works under the general direction of the Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor and organizes implements and conducts the nursing component of the program at the school sites. The incumbent is expected to communicate (by phone or in person) in a courteous and professional manner at all times. This position has sufficient knowledge and experience to assist others in ensuring that duties are performed in accordance with applicable rules, statutes and policies. This position is designated as a sensitive position and the position is required to maintain confidential information in accordance with the DOH and the Palm Beach County Health Department Information Security Policy, Protocols and Procedures. This position may view, update or release information, school nursing/medical records, clinical information and social security data. This position requires access to FL Shots System to review, update and/or enter immunizations. System access also includes People First and EARS for data entry.

Provides nursing services to students with acute and chronic health conditions, responds to emergencies, provides case management for those students identified with high risk and chronic health conditions, education to students concerning health maintenance and risky behaviors, assists with mandated screenings and follow up on abnormal results, coordinates parent and teacher consultations, oversees immunization compliance, disease surveillance and investigation and is a health consultant to school staff. Works under the direction of the Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor to ensure students receive complete health services. Assists in providing nursing knowledge and guidance to Senior Licensed Practical Nurse under the direction of the Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor. Implements the goals and objectives of the Comprehensive School Health Services Program in reference to promoting health, decreasing student involvement in substance abuse and incidence of suicide, and reducing the number of births to teens.

Other related duties as assigned. Participates in regular meetings with staff members to exchange information and participate in school health planning. Attends meetings as requested by school administration and provides nursing knowledge as necessary. Maintains appropriate records. Participates in in-service, trainings, and orientation programs.

Other job-related requirements for this position: Emergency duty STATEMENT: "Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural". Incumbent will be required to work on the DOH State Holiday, (Veteran's) Day when the students are in session. Access to private automobile is required for use in this position (VALID FLORIDA DRIVERS' LICENSE). Expenses reimbursed on a per mileage basis.

Will work total of 30 hours per week, however this position will not work: During the summer starting 3rd week in June through the 1st week in August. Will not work: 2-weeks in December and January during school winter break schedule and the week of school spring break. Incumbent will be expected to attend education days prior to start of each school year in August and in January.
