About this job

THE JOB
The Associate Merchant (Grocery) works with their category team to manage and grow the assigned category(ies). This includes assisting in the selection, forecasting, inventory management, pricing, revenue, margin, vendor relationships, and promotions. Creating and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with vendors as well as a high level of knowledge about customer interests are critical to being successful in this position.
 
 
THE SKILLS THAT ARE NEEDED
Vendor Management:
 
  • Effectively communicate in order to build cooperative relationships with national and local market vendors
  • Maximize vendor profitability and contribution per SKU
  • Develop new sources for ingredients, products and product development
  • Develop strategic alliances based on innovation and product development
  • Negotiate pricing, vendor programs, delivery, and payment terms
  • Facilitate mutually beneficial agreements around promotional opportunities and support
  • Be first to market in new products, innovation and points of difference


Pricing and Marketing:
 
  • Work together with pricing and marketing making recommends on promotional pricing points in order to competitively position products
  • Adjust pricing in order to manage flow of inventory and maximize productivity as determined by consumer demand
  • Assist in building strong programs on pricing to support everyday essentials
  • Through planogram use, effectively plan the shelving adjacency of products
  • Partner with marketing in the development of marketing vehicles to support category goals and objectives.


Category Management, Strategic Planning Execution and Inventory Supply Chain:
 
  • Lead, contribute to and execute parts of the strategic plan for the category
  • Launch/expand successful programs and product lines and implement successful exit strategies for unproductive merchandise
  • Launch line reviews in support of customer and seasonal expectations
  • Monitor trends in new products, consumer behavior, share, competition, fixturing and store layouts to make informed decisions and initiate innovation
  • Leverage fact-based decision making to drive growth and profitability.



  
  

 

THE EXPERIENCES
Natural/organic grocery management experience preferred.
Product knowledge required. 
Exceptional organization and attention to detail.
Strong financial analysis skills.
Strong decision-making, negotiation, and leadership skills.
Ability to multi-task and succeed in a fast-paced environment.
Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills.
Bachelor’s degree in business, retailing, management, sales, or marketing required.
Must have prior experience with product purchasing, negotiating, financial analysis, or inventory control. 
Previous P&L management preferred.
Previous experience with planogram execution preferred.
Previous role(s) in category management, to include broker/vender/supplier relationships preferred.
Proficient using MS Office, Excel, database and word processing programs.
