Job Summary:
Supervises activity of all departments, professional and technical staff. Serves
as the highest ranking administrative representative in the hospital
during evening and night shifts during weekdays and all shifts on
weekends and holidays.
Essential Duties:
Schedules and cancels agency nurses and patient observation aides according to guidelines. Assist the Admissions Department and physicians with bed availability and patient placement. Awareness of COBRA Guidelines. Maintains diversion records. Orients new Administrative Supervisors. Evaluates staffing schedules and ensures that staffing is based on patterns and patient acuity. Notifies Administrator-On-Call as needed. Interprets policies and procedures to staff and monitors compliance; assists with developing new policies. Arranges Arelief@ when absent. Organizes and implements projects, new programs. Procures supplies and equipment needed for patient care. Maintains
the Infection Control Program Guidelines, OSHA requirements, State
Licensure Requirements, JCAHO Standards and hospital goals and
objectives. Presents a professional appearance and manner. Evaluates own performance and professional growth. Makes rounds in nursing areas and non-nursing areas and evaluates activities. Records
notable patients, problems, complaints, census and overall
hospital activity on the Administrative Supervisor's report,
follows up on problems. Attends and actively participates in nursing department committees, meetings, and management seminars. Investigates and documents patient, employee, and physician occurrences. Initiates and documents employee counseling/discipline. Knowledge
of internal/external disasters in which appropriate policies,
procedures and plans must be followed to protect personnel,
patients and self. Maintains
a working relationship with all departments, nursing personnel,
and physicians.Functions as an effective public relations
representative both inside and out of the hospital. Demonstrates
the ability to represent administration to the internal clients
and families, media, Emergency Medical Services, Social Services,
Coroner and funeral home personnel and other outside agencies. Handles confidential patient and employee information. Handles patient=s personal possessions in accordance with established policies. Makes
decisions quickly and accurately; has a good understanding of
management skills; possesses skill in handling stressful situations
in a calm manner; skill in problem identification and solution. Performs other duties as assigned, and attends committees as assigned.
Education:
BSN required; MSN preferred.
Experience:
* Internal Candidates: Minimum four (4) years clinical nursing required, including minimum two years in critical care. Two to three years of management experience preferred with a knowledge of overall hospital operations. Must possess good judgment. Possess basic communication skills and good knowledge of nursing theory, practice and organizational behavior. Must follow proper lines of authority and be able to listen, plan and problem solve. Must show initiative and accept constructive criticism. Must be capable of evaluating, planning and decision making in order to solve patient related issues and administrative policy.
* External Candidates: Minimum five (5) years clinical nursing required, including minimum two years in critical care.
