POSITION SUMMARY:

The RN is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for patients seeking medical evaluation in an Emergency Department environment. The RN provides patient care through psychomotor skills, utilization of nursing process, support services and supervision of and delegation to LPN's, EMT 's and UAP's (unlicensed assistive personnel); completes all tasks/nursing interventions that require independent, specialized nursing knowledge, skill or judgment that cannot be delegated; and demonstrates specialized skills as related to the emergency management of patients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.

2. Willing and able to demonstrate appropriate core competencies annually or as requested.

3. Completes a comprehensive assessment according to hospital policy as related to management of emergencies in the Emergency Department.

4. Patient Triage.

5. Formulates a nursing diagnosis from assessment of patients' acute and chronic health problems.

6. Communicates effectively all patient assessment data with the healthcare professionals responsible for the patient.

7. Performs emergency procedures according to policy/procedure.

8. Assesses patient and patient representative's current learning needs and implements appropriate measures to meet knowledge deficits.

9. Demonstrates knowledge based in areas of, but not limited to, standards of care, practice and professional performance, policies and procedures, medications, lab values and legal issues.

10. Serves on hospital committees and/or participates in QI activities as directed by the Department Manager.

11. Assists with orientation of new employees and staff development activities for the unit.

12. Abides by Nursing Service Behavior Standards.

13. Performs additional job-related duties and functions as required.

14. Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

15. Support the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.

16. Actively seek ways to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and participate in professional development opportunities.

17. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

18. Completes annual educational requirements.

19. Understands and adheres to Bell's compliance standards as they appear in Bell's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

Tasks to be performed when staff RN is assigned Charge function on a given shift:

Individual assigned to charge is responsible to assess, plan, direct and evaluate the delivery of care to all patients in the following areas:

1. Demonstrates ability to work independently.

2. Assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of care provided on assigned shift and identifies problems with recommendations for improvement.

3. Directs/supervises others in the planning of patient care.

4. Notifies appropriate personnel of admissions to patient care unit from Emergency Department.

5. Effectively directs staff during any emergency situation.

MINIMUM LEVEL OF REQUIRED PREPARATION AND TRAINING/POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Minimum: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Current license to practice as an RN in the State of Michigan.

Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred: One year nursing experience.

CREDENTIALS:*

Required: Licensed RN in the State of Michigan.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Preferred: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification.

Trauma Nursing Course Certified (TNCC)
