Description

What is my job:

The Construction Estimator provides estimates and budgets based on material, labor, equipment, subcontract, and other direct and indirect costs of construction and engineering for projects on request for proposal (RFP) submitted by various sources.

How do I make a difference?

Continuously Improving Results
  • Develop estimates, conceptual estimates and comparisons to other projects
  • Analyze specifications, including sketches, blueprints, bills of material, or sample layouts to calculate costs using labor and material pricing, schedules and historical and market data
  • Perform productivity analysis of cost estimates to help with schedule duration as needed
  • Setup and administrate pre-bid and post-bid meetings
  • Field verify conditions and provide field support, as needed
  • Facilitate the bid process; review, analyze, and negotiate bid tab before awarding bids
  • Collect cost data from functional representatives, subcontractors and vendors
  • Prepare and maintain historical cost data
  • Create cost models for cost estimating assemblies; develop the criteria necessary for accurate and valid assessments
  • Revise estimates/budgets when scope of project changes
  • Estimate change orders as requested
  • Provide QA/QC support to the estimating process
  • Conduct research and gather information such as Technical Manuals and Parts Lists to clarify specifications for cost analysis, as needed
  • Identify and quantify risks associated with the various proposals and estimates submitted
  • Practice value engineering; assess if processes are up to Wegmans standards and offer recommendations on how we could better utilize our resources
  • Develop and submit budgets to accounting after AR is reviewed and approved
  • Facilitate the procurement management process; provide procurement information from bids to the field team to create procurement documents such as contracts and purchase orders and process documents to verify accuracy

  • Collaborate with Design, Maintenance, and field teams to establish best practices, ensure work is aligned and shared goals are achieved
  • Develop relationships with contractors and establish Wegmans’ reputation as a trusted partner; utilize these relationships to negotiate future stakeholders’ bids and provide feedback

Qualifications

What skills, learnings, and experiences are required?

  • 5 or more years of MEP Construction estimating or equivalent experience
  • Associates Degree in related field, and/or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with MEP Estimating software, as well as proficiency working with the Microsoft Office suite
  • Demonstrated experience Estimating with BIM technology
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing MCAA and NECA labor factors and SMACNA standards to create accurate estimates
  • Possess thorough knowledge of construction materials, equipment, costs, and procedures, as well as an understanding of the proposal process, project execution methodology, and contracts
  • Possess thorough knowledge of the following trade specific areas:
  • Electrical and Control systems construction, as well as the ability to read and follow related drawings and specifications
  • Mechanical systems construction, such as Plumbing, HVAC, Fire protection and Food Market Refrigeration, as well as the ability to read and follow related drawings and specifications
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Possess strong listening skills and hear many points of view without bias, asking clarifying questions to check for understanding
  • Use available resources to pursue goals and challenges with the intent of achieving results, striving for continued excellence and taking appropriate risks (Managing the 5 Measures)

  • American Society of Professional Estimators certification
  • Experience with applicable codes and food safety considerations
  • Experience estimating retail and/or food oriented projects
  • Use critical thinking to solve complex and difficult problems with effective solutions skillfully questioning multiple sources for answers, seeing the underlying and hidden problems and patterns beyond obvious symptoms to address root causes
  • Experience with project coordination, communicating goals and responsibilities to the team being sure to monitor performance against a project plan and effectively applying project controls. Include project stakeholders, team members, and subject matter experts in order to get things done
  • Experience with risk evaluation: proactively identifying areas of potential risk exposure, thoroughly analyzing the situation to ensure the financial investment of a solution makes sense and implementing cost-effective controls to mitigate risk


Work environment:
  • Work includes sitting for prolonged periods, repetitive hand and arm movements, frequent to constant use of the computer, frequent use of the telephone, along with continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Travel to job sites is required.
