Overview

Assists with various types of surgical operations and performs related services in the Surgery Unit, Recovery Room, and Central Sterile Units.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities

Prepares, dresses properly, and performs proper "scrub" procedure before entering the surgical suite.

Arranges instruments and other supplies in specific order to be immediately available to the surgeon or assistant.

Actively participates in the preparation of the patient using scrupulous aseptic principles.

Anticipates surgeon's needs, such as instruments, sponges, sutures, and suction tubes, and places them for his/her use in the most appropriate manner.

Observes patient during surgical procedures for complications and notifies the physician as necessary.

Furnishes emergency equipment to surgeon as requested and needed.

Is constantly alert for break in technique and responds immediately to prevent contamination of the operative field.

Managers contaminated or used instruments and supplies at all times to prevent the spread of infection and protect all involved personnel.

Assists in the Recovery Room as directed.

Ensures proper cleaning, sterilization, availability and storage of packs, supplies, and equipment.

Assist in orientation of new personnel to the Unit.

Ensures that areas of responsibilities are scrupulously clean.

Assists with coordination of Surgery Unit activities with those of other hospital units and those of the medical staff.

Assists with required records, reports, logs and Performance Improvement activities.

Appropriately investigates missing items and charges.

Demonstrates effectiveness in code situation and reports promptly when available.

Demonstrates clinical expertise necessary to function in the assigned area efficiently.

Demonstrates and promotes an awareness of patient rights and functions as a patient advocate.

Participates in all sponge, needle, suture, etc. counts and ensures that all are correct.

Participates in safety drills; completes inservice requirements and attends meetings as appropriate. Assists in other departments as needed.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

Education: Must be a graduate from an accredited school of Professional Nursing.

Licensure: Must be currently licensed to practice in the State of Missouri.

Experience: Inservice training in the principles and practice of surgical asepsis and education as stated above.

Certifications: ACLS, PALS and BLS (recertification every two years).

Other: Skills, knowledge and abilities: Knowledge of various steps of different operations to be able to anticipate surgeon's needs and of each surgeon's techniques. Correct method of handling instruments and supplies. Thorough knowledge of medical asepsis as it applies to the operating room and the sterilization process. Proper handling of tissue specimens, culture and smears. Good understanding of various instruments used for each type of operation and proper setup for each procedure. Thorough knowledge of general nursing theory and practices. Familiarity with organization and functions of all units, and policy, regulations and procedures of the hospital. Working knowledge of literature and new developments in the field of general surgical nursing. Working conditions, mental and physical requirements: Stand and walk most of the time on duty. Meet unit specific physical demands. May be required to work differing schedules, shifts, days of the week, or work frequently according to patient care requirements, and is available "on call".
