Job Overview:

Macy's Inc. seeks a passionate, team-oriented Principle Architect, User Experience to join its Customer Experience organization. The position is a strategic thought leader for one of five domains that form the Macy's Customer Lifecycle. The principle architect will play a key role in developing the multi-year experience roadmap for customer-facing features and functionalities for the Macys.com website and the in-store technology experience that present the highest financial return value to the division.

The Principal Architect, User Experience will apply their strong understanding of customer needs with an equally deep understanding of business goals to champion design solutions that deliver value through the Macy's and Bloomingdales websites, stores, and tools used by internal personnel.

Strong candidates should possess a proven track record of collaborating in a team environment, working and influencing in a cross-functional context, and using data driven decision making to inform the design of the experience.

This position reports to the Director of User Experience within the Customer Experience team.

Essential Functions:

1. Strategic thought leadership

a. able to look beyond the capabilities and limitations of the current day and craft a vision for where the domain is headed

b. able to identify creative opportunities for innovating beyond the competition

c. aware of the priorities of the business stakeholders and their vision for the future

d. seated at the table in terms of crafting a shared vision and strategy for the future of the domain

2. Consultant

a. share experience and expertise with other project resources

b. provide education, support & mentoring to junior UXAs

c. share information and perspectives with project teams regarding the vision & strategy of the domain

3. Deep domain expertise and ownership

a. fully versed in the latest trends within their domain area

b. builds, maintains, socializes and defends a clear perspective / vision for their domain

c. current on the competitive landscape with a solid perspective on what's working / not working and how / if Macy's

should be considering the same

4. Influencer

a. builds solid and well thought out business cases to support desired features / functions / enhancements / products

b. articulate and confident in presenting, explaining and defending business cases / arguments to management and

stakeholders

5. Collaborator

a. coordinates efforts and aligns visions with other domain leads

b. identifies cross-overs / collisions between domains & collaborates on solutions to ensure success and prevent

downstream issues

c. engages peripheral department resources to maintain alignment and vision

Qualifications:

Education/Experience
  • BA/BS required; 7 to 10 years product design experience
  • Has a proven successful track record; recognized as an expert across the division, who has excellent judgment and whose projects and team have contributed significantly to the success of the division
  • Marketplace experience: experience in an online retail environment (direct to consumer) preferably apparel, home, or other customer focused technology products
  • Strong people management skills required to inspire, develop, and coach team members


Communication Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communicator with all levels of business leaders; ability to influence key business leaders in the organization
  • Exceptional negotiation skills across a myriad of audiences; can successfully advocate both business-facing and IT technology solutions among peers and to executive leadership
  • Communicates product solution and benefits to internal and external customers (where appropriate)


Reasoning Ability
  • Sound business judgment: the ability to identify the business objectives, develop and implement a business strategy on projects; capable of making reliable business decisions during execution
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, at various stages of their development


Other Skills
  • Willingness to be an individual contributor; problem solving and creative thinking a must
  • Experience with the Agile development process preferred
