About this job

The Clinical Nurse Specialist interacts with all components of the organization and community to explain and define nursing and to set standards of nursing practice, through the 3 spheres of influence: patients, nurses, and organization. The CNS practice domains include expert practitioner, researcher, consultant, educator and leader. Creates and/or refines existing strategies and interventions for care of patients. He/she manages utilization of economic, technological, and human resources over a quality-based continuum of care to achieve the outcome of health maintenance and prevention. Models advanced level practice for all nursing staff and students. Provides expert care to patients in their area of expertise. Examines current practices to improve patient care outcomes. Designs, plans, and operationalizes new nursing care programs to optimally reflect trends in health care. Serves as a leader in educational experiences throughout the organization and community. Serves as a representative of advanced practice nursing in the community-at-large.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Certification required. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies. Certification within specialty area within 2 years of accepting position. Requires current Indiana license as Registered Nurse. MSN in Nursing from an accredited nursing program through Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) required. Demonstrated expertise in the practice of nursing validated by five years of current clinical practice and two years in the area of specialty practice. In employment, if job duties include performing moderate complexity testing procedures, must demonstrate proficiency in performing moderate complexity testing skills related to specimen processing, test performance, and test result reporting according to CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments) through training and clinical competency assessments.
